Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
When I receive the letter from the school on May 23rd, after a few days of consideration I would like to appeal the decision of withdrawing a year from school.
When I joined Queen??s University, I??m not doing very well in the first year, because of covid and online courses, which is make me really confused about my own future, these problems make me get major depression and anxiety. To deal with my own situation, I decide to leave the school for a year. At this time, I healed my mental health, and try different kinds of life. In the end, I believe back to study is the best thing I could do. So I back to school in the 2022 fall term, but at the end of the fall term, my grandfather was hospitalized with COVID-19 in December and my grandmother was hospitalized with early-stage cancer in March. They are really old and weak, and these situations increase a lot of stress and aggravate my depression, I need to use the medicine which I take from the doctor at last year to let my emotion keep stable. I have to stay up at night and use more time to talk with them (we are in different time zone). I have to say I was like walking dead at that time Because of that, I cannot focus on the classes, especially I read the books about death from Philosophy. During this year, I kept thinking about what kind of plan I would use to finish my studies. After conversations with my friends and teachers, I decided that I would join the history major to achieve academic success, after this I gradually shifted my focus to Philosophy and History, and unconsciously reduce the time of other courses. In the end, I got a B in history and a C in philosophy. I know these grades are normal for other people, but it??s a great improvement for myself when compared with my first-year grades. So I wish the school can cancel my punishment of withdrawing one year and let me continue to study at Queen??s University. I will submit the documents I have later.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: About my future study plan, I wish I could Join the history major, although I am currently in the Philosophy, I hope I could obtain permission to join the history major in the summer of 2023. After that, I would follow the courses required by the history major, such as the amount and content of courses required. I believe that studying the courses I??m interested in is good for both my grades and myself. So I wish I could maintain the full-time study of four courses per semester with the summer semester. In order to fix up the year I leave(2021-2022). So that I could graduate with other normal students at the same time. Although my overall grades are not enough for me to transfer to a history major, I wish the school could give me a chance by using grades only from history and philosophy. As for my psychological situation, I will keep in touch with my counselor and contact the school's mental health resources if necessary.
In the end, I really wish the school could accept my appeal, I was already late for other students one year, and I don??t want to waste another year again. I promise I will focus on my study in school, whether in Philosophy or History.

Decision(s) Being Appealed: Waive the requirement to withdraw for one year

Appeal Grounds

Appeals to the Board of Studies must include a letter based on one or more of the Grounds for Appeal (Appeal Regulation 3.4). What are the grounds you are basing your appeal on?
  • The Associate Dean's decision did not follow the rules of procedural fairness. A breach of procedural fairness includes such things as the Associate Dean failed to:
    • Remain unbiased when reviewing your petition.
    • Make a reasonable decision in your appeal. A “reasonable” decision is one that is based on evidence, thought out and supported by facts and logical inferences from the facts. To be reasonable, the decision must contain adequate reasons for the conclusions.
Appeal Grounds Details: Dear associate dean, I’m really sad when I receive your refusal letter. About the decision you made, may I ask is that I’m missing any evidence or paperwork? This is because my family is no one in our hometown in China for now, my parents working in Russia, my sister studies in Montreal, and I’m in Kingston, so there is hard to collect some evidence. I was talking with the counselor from the student wellness service last week, I didn’t get any advice from the counselor(I didn’t ask for this ), but that is still really helpful for me, I finally say all my experience and problem to someone else, that clear my mind and let me face my own problem. I know I’m not doing great last year, but for several classes, I’m doing okay. Now I have a future plan and know what to spend my life on it—history, I wish I could transport to history major. although I know I could drop the summer class for no punishment for my situation, I’m still keeping the hist125 for this summer and doing great on it. I love history and Queen’s u, I wish the school can cancel the withdrawal one-year as punishment.
