Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am Yiqi Jia and my student number is 20321711. I am writing to inform you that I want to cancel the school's decision to withdraw me for one year and get a chance to redo my first-year courses. I will show my situation and reasons below.

Firstly, I will show all reasons why I get an extremely low GPA in these two semesters. Last September??2022??, I arrived in Kingston and lived at ?655 Princess St??. The apartment manager gave me a bedroom that can not be opened and I didn??t feel uncomfortable at first. But after two weeks, my body felt uncomfortable. I immediately went to the front desk of my apartment to talk about my room??s window and send them an email too, they just tell me every bedroom window is guaranteed to open, you just need to repair the window. So I tried to apply to fix my window. Unfortunately, they didn??t succeed in fixing the window, and it just wouldn't open. Then I replied to the office by email and they said there was no way they could change my room for me and the only way is trying to find a sublet. In the end, I was forced to stay in this bedroom with substandard living conditions.

I am allergic to dust and dust and have perennial rhinitis. And my roommate filled his room with garbage. (I have photos to prove how bad my living situation is.) The stench of garbage is constantly around my room, and every few days my room gets a lot of bugs crawling into my bed. I have been depressed and uncomfortable. Unlucky, I can't improve my basic living conditions. Furthermore, I suffer from cervical spondylosis, accompanied by allergies, and the symptoms of my cervical spondylosis also affect me. In the first semester, I was unable to move my body significantly for a week due to cervical spondylosis, so I missed a whole week of classes for one week.

On November 25, 2022, I helped my parents??they can??t speak English)with all the paperwork to become permanent residents in Canada. I helped them move twice, apply for sin numbers, health cards, language schools, bank accounts, credit cards, and some prescription medications they need to keep taking. At the same time, my identity changed when my parents immigrated to Canada. I spent a lot of time changing my status from an international student to a local student.

Secondly, in addition to the influence of environmental factors, I did not actively face and solve the problem after it happened. First and most importantly, I did not take the initiative to build social networks and communicate with team members, nor did I take the initiative to get to know the relevant institutions of the school, especially when I encountered academic problems that could not be solved, I did not take the initiative to seek help from teaching assistants and professors, and I did not take the initiative to strive for and try to solve my GPA problem.

To specific, at the beginning of the previous academic year, the courses I chose were not very difficult. Two weeks later, on September 19th, 2022, the environment of my apartment and the influence of my roommates made my body feel very uncomfortable. I spend a lot of time negotiating the apartment every day, and my physical discomfort makes me have to rest to adjust. My apartment has not allowed me to change houses, so the symptoms of allergies have been occurring intermittently. Along with it comes the impact of cervical spondylosis. In November, my parents also arrived in Canada, and I became even busier, unable to allocate enough time for studying. My physical condition has also been affecting my ability to submit my homework on time.

Now, I have consulted the academic advisory department of PASS and made a new school year plan to help me better finish my studies. At the same time, I had moved into a nice apartment, my parents had started taking language lessons, and all the boring things in Canada were over. Now I have adjusted my mind and faced next year's study with a positive attitude. At the same time, I found a part-time job (Speedy Auto Service Kingston) during the summer vacation. I got up at 7 o 'clock every day and went to work to adjust my sleeping time. Through this job, I could also exercise my social and language skills and better communicate with classmates. I also went to a walk-in clinic for my allergies and cervical spondylosis, which I will cure.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Next academic, I will focus on three courses which are CHEM112, MATH111, and PHYS106. In my opinion, these three courses are most important to me. If I complete them successfully. It will help me in my future course choices. I will find Academic Advising to complete a study plan and ask classmates to study the difficulty of each course and make adjustments. Furthermore, I will apply to summer school to finish MATH 121. After I get my course schedule, I will do a specific weekly schedule that includes every homework, quiz, and test. Participate in the Lab and actively communicate with team members and try to get help when I don't understand. Actively completing various surveys at school. When I get into trouble with studying, I will ask TA and professors or Queen??s academic helping institution. I will keep this study plan and always review and check it. Below, these are important points:

1. Before the beginning of the semester, I will contact Academic Advising to discuss my next year??s study plan.
2. Focus on MATH111, CHEM112 and PHYS106 next semester. Study MATH121 in school next summer.
3. Always pay attention to every assignment and grade and never hand in any assignments less. Develop a learning plan based on the schedule every week.
4. Ask questions immediately after class and keep in touch with the professors and TA. Take part in more school activities, get to know your classmate.
5. Review my study plan and study status regularly to ensure that my academic goals are on track.
