Petition Letter
Petition Letter: This petition letter is related to my requirement to withdraw from the Life Science and Biochemistry program at Queen's University for 1 year. I am writing to have my requirement to withdraw waived. I understand that I did not do well my first year at Queen's University, though there were circumstances that affected me in a negative way that impacted my academic performance. I was having mental health problems during the school year dealing with depression and self-doubt due to an unfortunate situation with my significant other. This was someone I met at Queen's and decided to start seeing more often. I spent a lot of time with this person during the school year and ultimately after 5 months of seeing each other, I discovered that my significant other was unfaithful. This was the beginning of a downward spiral for me, which I have now corrected. Although at the time I was struggling mentally and began to shut myself in my room because of self-doubt and anxiety that I was feeling. I did not have many people to talk to, I kept the feelings to myself and had only been able to talk to 1 of my friends for guidance and reassurance. This was something that I found was very difficult for me to talk about to others and had therefore not talked to any family members or other trusting people in my life. Because of the circumstance I was in, I began to focus less on myself and do things that were able to numb my sadness and instead help me forget about the situation I was in. I decided to go out more and attend parties and do things that brought action or presence into my life. I started to talk with my friends and others that have gone through the same experience and I have begun to work on myself more and forget about the things that happened and focus on my goals and what I want to achieve. I have made an academic plan and have made adjustments to help myself perform better in school my next academic year.
Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Academic plan:
Continue in Life Science and biochemistry and graduate with my bachelors degree. Major in Life science
Need to complete and get credits for following courses:
BIOL 103
CHEM 112
BCHM 218
MICR 221 or MICR271
CHEM 281
CHEM 282
PHGY 215
PHGY 216
PHYS 115
MATH 120
MATH 121
MATH 123 & MATH 124
45 Credits in Elective Courses
I will try to take the regular course load in my first semester, not having personal problems to deal with will allow me to have more time to focus on my academic progress and will also allow me to work on myself and the tasks assigned. If the course load is too much I can drop a course and take a lighter load in the second semester.
A challenge I faced in my first year was mental health problems due to personal relations. I will be focusing on myself for the rest of the school duration and put other things second. I have also learned from my mistakes this past school year and know that my academic progress is of utmost importance. I will need to make sacrifices whether it be events or parties to make sure that the requirements for my academic requirements are met.
Some of the skills I need to build moving forward is time management and discipline. Time management to make sure that the things that need to get done are finished on time and having the time to balance certain aspects of my life such as sleep, academics and personal wellbeing. I also need the discipline to work on the important tasks at hand. Which means putting my academics before any leisure time, and meeting expectations whether it be school or in any other field.
I plan to use calendars and reminders to assist in keeping track of my time management. While discipline is something that takes time and repetition to develop, therefore I will start personal wellness and self improvement now over the summer to ensure a foundation for the upcoming academic year. I will also be talking to an academic advisor to find recommendations on strategies to help aid my progress next year.
