Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Jenn Stephenson,

I am writing to request your assistance in waiving the requirement to withdraw from Queen's University for one year. As a student currently enrolled in the Sociology BAH degree, I encountered unexpected circumstances last semester and ensuing mental health challenges that made it difficult to process academic material. Please see from my transcripts that although I was on probation in 2022/23, I know I was doing better in the first semester. I felt like I was getting on the right track academically. However, when my grandpa passed on December 16, 2023, it affected my mental health severely because our relationship was very unique and he has lived with me my whole life. Then my mother was at risk of getting cancer due to a developing tumour and was in the hospital for three months from early January to mid-March, so I was very distracted with family matters. I travelled back to Toronto several times to help her and support my family. I have never felt so low, so I contacted Student Wellness Services in mid-January. Due to the continuing stress in the Winter term and because I missed many in-person lectures and tutorials (as I was in Toronto), I could not focus or make time to learn certain course material, leading to my failings in two courses.
I understand that Queen's University has academic policies and procedures that must be followed. I know everything will be ok. I would say that I feel like I am getting better as I am keeping myself occupied by doing hobbies/interests that make me happy like playing sports and spending time with children. I also feel like I have come a long way and I am proud of myself for where I am at with the mental struggles. I am the first in my family to go to university, and I also cannot let my parents down. I know that if I am required to withdraw, they would take it the wrong way and it would add more stress and misunderstandings that I do not want to go through. This is why I ask that you make an exception in my case, given the circumstances that I have faced. I appreciate your time and attention to my request, and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Please let me know if you need any further information from me, and I will be happy to provide it.

Thank you for your consideration.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Dear Jenn Stephenson,

Moving forward, I'm committed to continue using student wellness services in order to prioritize my mental health and improve my academic success. I cannot promise you that I will be okay mentally throughout the completion of my degree, but I have learned and found a way to cope with my attacks and I know how to control myself in these cases. I started to prioritize my physical and mental health, by being outside or at the gym, doing more breathing and meditating, and journaling my feelings. So overall, it should not impact my education drastically because I would have a plan.
In order to enhance my performance and get guidance laying out an effective plan or schedule to better organize my academic responsibilities and daily routine, I also will make the most of the support provided by Student Academic Success Services. I plan on speaking with academic advisors to get guidance on how to choose my courses and workload most effectively and will be reaching out to career coaches for advice for what is best for my future. I am sure I can complete the program's requirements and succeed if I take advantage of the resources that are offered.

Thank you for your time, I hope to hear from you soon.
