Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am writing this petition letter after receiving a requirement to withdraw for one year to request that this requirement waived until my GPA can be re-evaluated after all of the grades for this semester are submitted. I have experienced an extenuating circumstance pertaining to a severe and ongoing physical illness during the second semester. This illness prevented me from attending classes, exams, and completing coursework beginning April 6th 2023. I have worked to mitigate the impacts of this illness by attending regular and ongoing appointments with a healthcare provider at Student Wellness Services, and over the course of multiple weeks adjusted medications and doses to help. The medication adjustments also impacted my academics due to varying levels of success in treating the symptoms and adjusting to side effects. I have received long-term academic consideration for this extenuating circumstance, and have been in contact with my professors and we have developed a plan together to complete the outstanding coursework over the summer. Due to this situation, I received two incomplete grades on my transcript (for STAT 263 and ENSC 230), as well as one ‘F’ as a placeholder - which I anticipate will be changed to a higher grade once my final assignment is graded by the professor. The placeholder ‘F’ is the reason why my cGPA is below the threshold of 1.6 – once it is changed, my cGPA will be above the threshold and had an IN been submitted instead, I would not have had my academic standing re-evaluated at this time (too few credits completed). I was able to complete all coursework for the remaining three classes. Furthermore, it should be noted that my academic performance has significantly improved during my second year of university (particularly in the second semester), even earning several B’s and an A+. Since the beginning of my second year, I have been shadowing the Environmental Studies plan (for which I have completed the majority of first and second year required courses) and my grades are significantly better in these classes as I enjoy them much more. I planned to apply for a change of plan this spring, but will not be able to due to the requirement to withdraw for one year.
Once the remainder of my grades are submitted and appear on my transcript, my cumulative GPA will be well above the required cGPA of 1.6. Re-evaluating my academic standing with all of my grades from this semester will far more accurately reflect my overall academic performance for the year. Please consider waiving the requirement to withdraw for one year given the extenuating circumstances I have experienced and the resulting impact on my cGPA until I have completed all courses and the remainder of my grades can be submitted. I have worked hard this past year to be academically successful after a difficult first year, and would be grateful for the opportunity to continue my studies this fall, as I have nearly completely recovered and do not believe the illness will continue to impact my academics in the coming year.

This fall, there are a number of measures I intend to take to ensure academic success after experiencing an extenuating circumstance over the winter semester. First, I intend to take a lighter course load of four courses at a time. I also intend to continue to shadow the ENSC plan, as I am far more academically successful in these courses due to a much higher level of interest in the content. I have reviewed the courses and as it is not a competitive program, I should be able to continue to do this as there aren't any courses I need to take at my level restricted to students who are registered in an ENSC plan. I intend to submit a change of plan request next spring to officially switch to Environmental Studies. Additionally, I will maintain regular appointments with my healthcare providers until such time as I have completely recovered (anticipated this summer, in July or early August). So long as my recovery continues as expected, there should be no physical health barrier to my success in university this fall. In the unlikely scenario that these circumstances change, I will reconsider my academic plans and re-evaluate the next steps as appropriate.
