Petition Letter: Hello,
My name is Josh Reimer and my student number is 20289106. I am writing (in hopes of being granted) to request a late drop of my online Anatomy 100 class that I was enrolled in during the Winter 2023 semester. I understand that the drop date is long passed for this course, but due to unforeseen personal circumstances at home in Newfoundland, I was not able to perform up to my standard in this class. When enrolling in classes this semester, I had several preferred options that I was waitlisted for and I did not get in to them. I added a fifth course a couple days after the start of the semester and I chose this Anatomy course. I was having a rough time throughout a portion of this semester with several issues back home in Newfoundland that took a toll on my mental and physical health. (and, while I know this is not an excuse) For several weeks I struggled to balance my focus on academics and dealing with my mental health. I sought help through online crisis management, counselling and peer support services available to me as a Newfoundland resident (Bridgethegapp.ca) I was unable to dedicate the appropriate time and energy required to maintain a successful grade in this class. For my other classes, it was much easier to maintain focus, as they are in person classes and I tend to do much better with learning face to face as opposed to online. I made the in person classes a priority as they also helped me maintain routine and focus. I had other time commitments as well, including playing for the varsity basketball team, and the in person lectures, seminars, labs, etc. proved to be much easier to make time for and focus on. Balancing these personal issues, in person and online classes, as well as other time commitments proved to be too much for me for a significant portion of the semester in question. During that time, I missed several assignments and tests which make up a significant portion of the grade in that course. Due to these missed grades, it quickly became impossible for me to make up these missed assignments and pass the course. In the other face to face courses, I did not struggle and miss as much during this time. I understand the academic and financial penalties that the late drop would incur, and I am prepared to accept them fully. Thank you for taking the time to consider my request and for your understanding of the circumstances that led to this situation. If there is any additional information required in this process, please do not hesitate to reach out via email at 20jjmr1@queensu.ca.
Thank you for your time,
Josh Reimer
