Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean Academic,

I am writing regarding petitioning for credit standing in four of my previous courses:
ANAT 215 (Fall 2022) with instructor Leslie McKenzie.
CHEM 222 (Winter 2023) with instructor Gang Wu.
BIOL 200 (Winter 2023) with instructors Paul Grogan and Timothy Birt.
BIOL 206 (Winter 2023) with instructors Drew Sauve and Maria Jose.

My name is Azhar Jamal, and I am a biology student entering my third year this fall. As a biology student, I am passionate about my studies and dedicated to achieving academic success. However, I faced significant challenges due to undiagnosed anxiety that emerged after I moved away from home during my first year. In October of my second year, the symptoms of my anxiety became noticeable and started to impact my daily life. Despite my struggles, I persevered throughout the semester, even though I repeatedly declined help from my parents.
It wasn't until the second semester's reading week that I reached a breaking point. My undiagnosed anxiety had taken such a toll on my life that I had to take a step back from school and leave Kingston for a month to assess my mental health.During that time, I sought professional help and received an official diagnosis of anxiety. I am now on medication and have a supportive healthcare team guiding me towards the necessary care. The courses I am petitioning for were particularly affected by my anxiety, hindering my ability to perform to the best of my abilities.

I would like to petition for credit standing in ANAT 215 because it was my most demanding course in the Fall of 2022. Not only did it involve complex material, but the assessments were also challenging. The course included two in-person timed practicals where I had to identify specific body parts indicated by arrows within a minute. As you can imagine, these practicals were anxiety-inducing, and without the support and accommodations I needed, I struggled through both, even failing the first one.

Furthermore, I would like to petition for credit standing in my three main courses from Winter 2023. These courses were essential requirements for my degree and were significantly impacted by my time away from school, focusing on my mental health. I had discussed potential schedule adjustments with advisors to balance my core subjects prior to the beginning of school, but unfortunately, due to availability conflicts, my requests were denied, on multiple attempts. My anxiety prevented me from handling such a heavy course load simultaneously, resulting in my inability to succeed in these courses.Upon reviewing my transcript, you will notice that my performance during the first year was not strong. However, I showed improvement in the Fall of 2022, achieving higher grades. I was on the right track, but my prolonged self-neglect led me to prioritize my well-being. The purpose of this petition is to regain my momentum and find my path again.

I have applied to transfer to the University of Alberta and am currently on the waitlist. A successful petition would greatly boost my GPA and enhance my chances of admission. Although it may surprise you as an Associate Dean, Edmonton is my hometown. It is where my family, friends, doctors, and support system reside. Initially, I believed I could succeed independently, but I now realize that I am not yet prepared to be on my own, and that's okay. Currently, I am underperforming in all aspects of my life due to internal imbalances, and being far from home doesn't seem conducive to my well-being.

I want to clarify that while the University of Alberta is my primary goal, this doesn't mean my journey at Queen's University is over. An approved petition would not only improve my GPA but also provide a fresh perspective on my academic journey, giving me hope that the effort I have invested thus far has not been in vain. My time at Queen's has left me feeling defeated, but this petition has the potential to change that, boosting not only my grades but also my confidence. Increased confidence could alter my mindset, allowing me to focus more and find motivation. The truth is, my passion lies in academia, and I aspire to accomplish great things in the field of health. However, to excel, I must prioritize self-care, and this petition is one of the steps towards achieving that goal.

Thank you for considering my petition. I am hopeful that you will understand the challenges I faced and grant me the opportunity to regain my academic momentum. I am eager to demonstrate my capabilities and commitment to my studies.

Sincerely,

Azhar Jamal
