Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am Caleb Rasmussen, a dedicated student of Queen's, and a player on our Varsity Football Team. I am writing this petition to request your compassionate consideration for withdrawal from MATH 126 and POLS 110 for the previous academic term due to two extenuating circumstances.

Over the final 2 months of the winter semester, both my grandparents had fallen seriously ill. Their illness has presented significant challenges for my family. Alongside this emotionally taxing situation, the strain of trying to balance my academic, athletic, and personal commitments had become increasingly challenging. My grandma broke her hip and my grandpa broke his collarbone and leg, unfortunately due to their age it will be a long recovery if they manage to recover.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I also attempted to keep up with the rigor and dedication required for maintaining my athletic performance as I found this exercise and comradery helpful for my situation. But coupled with the coursework it proved extremely difficult to balance with my family obligations, especially in two courses that I was already working hard to keep a passing grade, MATH 126 and POLS 110. Despite my strong commitment to my studies and my team, the previous circumstances have led to the current situation.

I wish to emphasize that this situation is not born out of a lack of interest or capability in the subject matter or an inability to contribute to the team. Rather, it is a temporary measure necessitated by circumstances beyond my control. As you will see, I did ok in my other courses achieving, B- in Econ, C in CISC 121, and C in PHIL111, but please understand that these grades are also not up to the standard I wished to hold myself to in my first year at Queen’s.

I have now met with Athletics Staff, Milana McNamee, and football Coach, Ryan Bechmanis, to address my grades. I will likely be meeting with a Staff Mentor weekly in the fall to ensure that I am achieving the academic results I hope for.

Given the gravity of the situation, I was unable to prioritize my academic commitments. In hindsight I realize that I should have sought help within the last two months of school. I am confident that this will be a temporary setback and that I will return to my academic and athletic commitments with the same dedication I had at the start of the year.

I kindly request you to consider my situation and approve my petition to drop MATH 126 and POLS 110 without academic penalty. I deeply appreciate your understanding and patience as I navigate through this challenging period in my life. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.
