Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Appeal Comittee,
My name is John Abacioglu and in September 2014 I started my first year at Queens U General arts Degree.
The original path I considered on taking was ECON which consisted of me taking these classes: econ 110, math 126, geo 101/102, devs 100, phil 115. Just like many of my peers I decided to stay in residence first year.
My first year started off just like I planned as in I was able to deal with my illness perfectly and able to manage my time. Knowing that the first month isn't an accurate representation, i made sure to stay aware and consciously keep up with my classes. Within the first month of class I started to feel the excruciating effects of my illness but with the help of my current meds (Sertraline) and mental training I was able to cope with most of my struggles. However as time passed and thanksgiving neared I was planned to go back home and visit my parents. My doctor had requested an appointment and I made that happen during thanksgiving. During the meeting I discussed my current situation and he recommended me another med (Clonazepam)..
Once I got back from Thanksgiving weekend that's when the problems started to consume my daily life. I was having difficulty sleeping regularly in terms of getting to sleep and staying in bed. My condition had gotten to a point where Im not able to focus on any of my classes whether I'm in class, a test, writing an essay, studying in res, or in the library.. The harder I would try to cope with my condition the more difficult it would get and this started the negative mindset towards a downward spiral.
With these efforts I was able to get by first semester and was ready for second semester. My condition affected my diet which resulted in living a much less active life. Due to this diet change I ended up losing 40 pounds which resulted in having no energy both mentally and physically. Going into it, I had a discussion with my parents and we made the conscious decision to maybe drop 1 or 2 courses to decrease the workload in hopes of succeeding.
About a month into second semester, I decided to go through with this decision and drop those courses. Unfortunately this decision didn't go exactly as I hoped and my condition continued to disrupt my daily routines. In an attempt to recover I booked some time to have a meeting with the disabilities services director. After not being able to recapture my composure I decided to have another meeting with my psychiatrist to increase the dosage in a final attempt to help me succeed.
As the semester was winding down, I had an unintentional altercation which resulted in me breaking my orbital and zygoma bone.. To fix this I required plastic surgery to fix my face which took both mental and physical efforts to cope with. I was given heavy meds to deal with the pain and all of this did not make it any easier to keep myself composed as a student.
For the final quarter of second semester my only goal was to pass my remaining courses. Unfortunately the increased stress levels mixed with my injury made it a lot more difficult than I had expected. In the end this resulted in a feeble attempt at my exams and completely missing my math exam.
As this letter and my supporting document from my psychiatrist, which will go into more detail, I would like to grant appeal for the courses that I took and start my second year with a clean record.
