Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am writing to request a waiver of the petition deadline for the Fall 2022 semester due to extenuating circumstances that have significantly impacted my academic performance. Specifically, I have been struggling with depression, which has had a profound effect on my ability to meet the requirements for ENGL 100A, DRAM 100A, and FILM 110A.
Since November 2022, I have been battling depression, which has resulted in a persistent low mood and overwhelming feelings of despair. These emotional challenges have made it incredibly difficult for me to concentrate on my studies and meet the expectations set by my professors. As a previously high-achieving student, this sudden decline in my academic performance has been deeply distressing.
The symptoms of depression have manifested in various ways, including difficulty sleeping, frequent nightmares, and persistent anxiety. These issues have greatly impacted my ability to focus during lectures and complete assignments effectively. Despite my best efforts, the pressure to excel and the fear of falling short of my own high expectations have only exacerbated my distress and hindered my academic progress.
Recognizing the severity of my condition, I sought help from the university's support services, including SWS Counselling Services, as well as reaching out to professors and academic advisors such as Professor Simpson, Professor Reeves, Dr. Fanning, Professor Daralyn, and others. Their support and understanding have been invaluable during this challenging period.
In April 2023, I received an official diagnosis of moderate depression from the university, confirming the validity of my struggles. However, due to my reluctance to worry my parents, I have shouldered the burden of coping with depression on my own while trying to meet the expectations of my professors. Regrettably, these circumstances have resulted in incomplete course requirements, including assignments and exams, leading to a significantly low GPA for the Fall 2022 semester.
Since May 16, 2023, I have returned to China and sought comprehensive treatment for my mental health at a specialized psychiatric hospital. Through systematic therapy, including medication and psychological interventions, I am pleased to report that my condition has significantly improved. I have regained my motivation and ability to engage in both academic pursuits and daily life activities. My doctor has assured me that with another month of treatment, my condition will be well within my control.
Given the circumstances described above, I kindly request your understanding and consideration in waiving the petition deadline for ENGL 100A, DRAM 100A, and FILM 110A for the Fall 2022 semester. I genuinely believe that with the improved state of my mental health and the necessary support, I can confidently resume my academic responsibilities and demonstrate my true potential.
I understand the importance of adhering to academic deadlines, but I genuinely hope that you will take into account the exceptional circumstances I have faced during this challenging period. I am fully committed to making up for the academic deficiencies and ensuring a successful academic journey moving forward.
Thank you for your time and understanding. I look forward to your favorable response.
