To the Faculty of Arts & Science,
My name is Kiana Naser, and I am a third year Life Sciences student at Queen’s University. I am writing to you to request dropping a course from this past winter semester (2023), the PHGY 350 course, after an unexpected problem arose at the beginning of the semester. Within this letter, I aim to clearly explain the situation that took place this semester, and hope that you will consider this matter with patience and understanding.
During the summer course registration period (August 2022), I had enrolled in PHGY 350, one of the few available courses to help fulfill my degree requirements. However, during the first week of the winter semester (January 2023), a spot in BCHM 370 opened, a course I needed as a prerequisite to other fourth year LISC courses. As BCHM 370 was a priority for me, I swapped PHGY 350 for BCHM 370, successfully dropping the former course for the latter.
After that, the onQ icon for PHGY 350 disappeared and I no longer had access to the course content. Instead, the BCHM 370 icon appeared, and I began my studies in this course. On my SOLUS weekly schedule, PHGY 350 (which had 3 lectures/week), was no longer included. Instead, the BCHM 370 schedule was available, showing me a 3:30-5:30pm class on Wednesday every week. I began my studies in BCHM 370, achieving a very high mark in the course, and discontinued lecture attendance, assignment submission, and exam completion for the PHGY 350 course, having no reason to continue forward.
At that point, I had no reason to believe that I was still enrolled in PHGY 350, as the successful course swap, entry into BCHM 370, and changes to onQ and SOLUS proved that I was enrolled in five courses in Winter 2023 (BCHM 370, PHAR 370, IDIS 199, NSCI 323, MICR 386).
As a result, I was incredibly surprised when the Winter 2023 Exam Schedule was released, to show that I was scheduled for an exam in PHGY 350. I had thought, perhaps it was a mistake in SOLUS, or a glitch in the system. I went back and checked my SOLUS records, again confirming that I was not enrolled in PHGY 350. However, upon reaching out to the SOLUS team and various Faculty members, I was made aware that I was, in fact, enrolled in both BCHM 310 and PHGY 350.
I am writing to you as a student incredibly concerned about my future career endeavours having the PHGY 350 grade of an F on my transcript. I have worked tirelessly throughout my undergraduate degree at Queen’s University as a pre-medical student, eager to begin applying to medical schools this fall. I am extremely worried about the state of my application, as I know this grade on my transcript will obstruct my chances of being accepted into medical school, despite my other course marks, extensive extracurricular work within and outside of the Queen’s Community, and MCAT score. The past couple of months have been especially challenging for me, balancing my academic and prospective career life with seeking treatment for mental health challenges that have arisen over the past year. I enrolled in IDIS 199 Mental Health and Resiliency, which helped me to move forward with seeking both pharmacological and psychological therapy with a healthcare professional. I have been working to bring myself to a healthy mental and emotional space in order to successfully apply and hopefully be accepted into medical school, and I am deeply afraid that the situation at hand will impede that.
