Petition Letter: Respected Associate Dean,
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to formally request an academic petition regarding my Math 121 grade as a late course drop. I believe that there were extenuating circumstances that significantly impacted my academic performance in the course.
Firstly, I would like to bring to your attention the issue of visa delay problems, due to which I had to switch from Math 126 to 121 because the original course I had signed up for didn’t offer an online version. Not only that, the delay resulted in my arrival in Canada only during the reading week. To give you a timeline: I got my visa approval on October 6, 2022, arrived in Canada late October 11, 2022 and moved into residence on October 15, 2022.
Due to the unforeseen delays in the visa processing, I was unable to begin the course at the same time as my peers. As a result, I missed crucial lectures, course material, and important assessments during the initial weeks of the semester. This setback significantly hampered my ability to catch up and integrate into the course effectively.
Additionally, the process of adjusting to a new environment, academic system, and cultural differences proved to be more challenging than anticipated. While I initially believed that I would be able to handle the demands of a more advanced course like Math 121, I soon realized that the transition required more time and effort than I had anticipated. Like many first-year students, I underestimated the rigour and level of difficulty associated with university-level mathematics courses. Consequently, I struggled to cope with the coursework, resulting in subpar performance.
Despite my previous academic records, which indicated proficiency in mathematics, the circumstances mentioned above greatly hindered my ability to perform at my full potential. It is with deep regret that I acknowledge my inability to meet the course requirements and expectations, and I take full responsibility for my lack of foresight and miscalculation. As for not dropping the course by the March 1 deadline, I acknowledge that I should have considered this option earlier. At that time, I believed I could handle the challenges and improve my performance in the course. Unfortunately, it became apparent later that the difficulties were more significant than I had initially anticipated, and I was trying to save money.
Considering the exceptional circumstances I faced, I kindly request that you consider my petition for the late course drop of my Math 121 grade and the subsequent exclusion of this course from my GPA calculation. By doing so, I believe that it would provide a fair and accurate representation of my academic capabilities, taking into account the challenges I encountered due to visa delays and the subsequent difficulties I faced adjusting to a new academic setting.
I understand that the university has policies and guidelines in place, and I am fully aware that exceptions are made only in exceptional cases. I assure you that I have learned from this experience and have taken proactive steps to address my shortcomings. Moving forward, I am committed to seeking appropriate academic support and dedicating the necessary time and effort to succeed in my future courses.
In the upcoming year, I plan to take MATH 126, which aligns better with the ECON plan I am pursuing. I believe being enrolled in the most suitable course for my degree and skills will be a crucial strategy to support my academic success. Not only that, I plan to continue consulting with wellness services on campus to ensure that I don’t repeat the same mistakes as last year.
To support my petition, I have attached relevant documentation, including proof of visa delays, as well as any additional supporting materials that may assist the committee in understanding the circumstances I faced.
