Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing this petition for an Aegrotat (AG) standing in DEVS 220. On my record, I have a doctor's note prescribing reduced academic workload and flexible deadlines until July 31, subsequently resulting in an academic consideration from March 14 until June 6. As I am a student pursing social work in September 2023, I was required to complete the DEVS program and could not take a break from courses during my illness. As you can see with my academic records, I have been a committed and am very enthusiastic about my studies. I love studying and if it weren't for unforeseen illness, I would not have struggled to complete coursework earlier in the term or communicate with the instructor. Moreover, I have caught up with all of my winter course work and spring course work in a very short time, despite still in recovery. My situation is not a result of simply being disinterested in my studies, I have made huge financial and personal sacrifices in order for me to complete my education.
As I had a long term academic consideration for severe illness-based extenuating circumstances, I was not able to communicate with the instructor easily, and I assumed I would be able to continue communication when I was no longer incapacitated. Therefore, when I communicated with Ian Fanning in June for accommodations, he simply recommended I apply for a late course drop without offering any other options or assistance. I then concentrated on completing coursework that was due for the remainder of the course and other courses for Spring and Winter. For DEVS 220, I managed to complete everything for the remainder of the course on time or within my accommodations timeline.
When my academic consideration expired in early June, QSAS arranged accommodations for me in early July that included extensions for deadlines longer than 7 days and excused absences from group work. There was a gap between my academic consideration (expired June 6) and Academic accommodations (approved June 28), as I was still incapacitated and did not know or understand how to proceed for accommodations due to the ongoing nature of the illness. I also did not understand the differences between accommodations and considerations and submitted coursework for DEVS 220 in July, that was originally due in mid-May, as I thought an accommodation for submissions
