Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Deena, and I was a CHEM112 student during the 2018-2019 academic term. In the spring of 2022, I graduated with my BScH in kinesiology from Queen’s University. I am currently a second year MSc Epidemiology student at the University of Ottawa.

I am reaching out to inquire about the possibility of a grade change, as I am currently in an unfortunate situation that necessitates meeting a specific requirement for my medical school application. As per the uOttawa Medical School admission requirements, applicants are required to possess a B letter grade or higher in all pre-requisite classes (this includes general chemistry with a lab). However, years ago when I took CHEM 112, I scored just shy of this threshold earning a B-.

Given the significance of this requirement for my application, I am simply wondering if this small grade change years later is even a possibility. As I prepare to write my thesis over the next year, not having to go back to take this undergraduate course would save me both valuable time and money. I understand that it has been four years since I completed the course, and I fully respect the policies and procedures set in place by the university. However, I am hopeful that you might be able to offer some insight into any available options or avenues for reconsideration in light of my circumstances. As evident though my transcript and pursuit of continued education, I feel as though I have developed greatly as a student since my first year of university. I believe that this grade does not reflect who I am today.

I truly appreciate your time and consideration in this matter.

Best,

Deena Fremont

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: As I am a graduate from Queen's University and therefore was successful in receiving my degree, my academic plan will appear different than compared to current students. As for my MSc degree, I have finished all my required coursework and now am focusing on writing my thesis and medical school application. I plan to defend/finish in early spring, and if successful in my application begin medical school in the fall of 2024.

As for my strategies for success, I plan to bring my coping and resilience skills to my second year of my MSc degree. I need to continue to build my independence skills as a graduate student as I begin to write my thesis. I plan on using the support and resources available to me by the faculty of my school, and thesis team and supervisor.
