Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am writing to request consideration for the provision of an Aegrotat grade in DEVS 495, a decision that I made after discussions and consultation with Professor A. Da Costa, who indicated to me that he would be supportive.
Throughout my university career I have been under neurological care and a varying course of anti-seizure medications for the control of epilepsy. I have benefitted from academic accommodations through HCDS, and for the most part have managed my courses and work-load well as a result. This year, however, a change of neurologists led to a delay in my cycle of appointments, and I also underwent a change in medication just after the December break. In January I experienced a number of seizures and associated problems. Consultations with my new neurologist led to adjustments in the level of medication, and some reconsideration of the options available, but my academic performance was very much compromised for a considerable number of weeks. We are now cautiously optimistic that the new course of medications has stabilized my situation, but the term was near over before we reached that understanding.
Because of my medical situation, I had earlier in the year already decided to reduce my course load to just three in the Winter term, two of which were conventional lecture-style first-year courses (ITAL 112 and HLTH 102). The third course, DEVS 495, is a seminar-style discussion-based course with a considerable amount of required readings and participatory involvement; it is also a course that I require for graduation. Its unique requirements meant that my medical indisposition early in the term proved particularly problematic, an issue that I have discussed at length on several occasions with Prof. Da Costa. He indicated that the quality and nature of my contributions to the course could justify the awarding of an Aegrotat grade, and advised me to make such an application.
