Petition Letter: I am petitioning the decision that I must withdraw from Queen’s for one year. I am really thankful for the opportunity to appeal.
In my last year of study, I struggled with my mental illness, and I didn’t take it seriously therefore it is hard for me to focus on my schoolwork, and I failed it. At first, I did great on my study. But I am afraid to talk to the professor and I didn't make many friends as well which means I have no one to discuss the part that I don’t understand in class. As the time went by, the neglect of questions showing on my following tests, and I am scared to go to school or even check on my email. Since I get so bad results on my study, I tend to be careless so that I wouldn’t feel anything but then the expectations from me and my parents takes me down. At this point I didn’t realize I already had mental problems.
So basically, I was studying on my own for the whole of last year and all my classes were either in computer science or math, which I found out was my weakness and I hate them. I never really thought of changing my courses because I feel like I should take those classes to get a good job, well that’s definitely way too far for now but I have a really good imagination about my future. And that's also what my parents want me to do, and they are paying for my tuition, so I thought I had no chance of taking other classes. Because I have no social and I’m always alone, I don’t talk to any professor and advisors, things are getting worse every day. I feel stressed but somehow, I have no energy to change the situation. I stopped going to classes and checking emails, staying at home all the time.
In the last semester, I started to talk to my parents about how much I hate my current major and they were not happy with that. Therefore, I kept doing all these classes that I don’t like otherwise they will not pay my tuition. Since I lost too many classes I cannot catch up and I just back to the situation like before. The reason why I wasted so much time did not drop my courses on time is because I feel ashamed of myself. I don’t want anyone to know that I’m having a hard time and I feel like no one really cares about me, not even my parents. I am afraid that I’ll upset my parents and I always thought I’ll pass in the end without doing too much work on my studies.
This summer my depression and anxious raise to the peak and I started to suicide. At this point I realized I might have depression and I started to see counselors every week. Not only in school but also on SSP (student support program). Since all I did was hide behind reality it was a very torturous journey of counseling and I finally realized that I should study what I like and take it as my responsibility. Talking to my parents also took me tons of time because they think I was faking it, and they don’t understand.
After I talked to the therapist constantly, I got pretty good cured. And I talked to my parents again then they finally understood and supported me. But from now on, I understand I am the only one in charge of my life and I have to seek help on time otherwise I’ll sink into the bad circle over and over again. I will not be afraid of what other people think about me and just focus on myself. Also, I’ll keep having counseling and talk to advisors more often. I’m gonna focus on everyday instead of setting huge goals but have done nothing. I am fully confident about studying what I like. I know what I like now and I really need the chance to go back to school. I am ready.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: After a long consideration I talked with the academic advisor. Here are the reasons I concluded about why I failed on my last year study:
1. I was not interested in what I studied therefore I am mentally and physically unable to achieve a good grade.
2. I added too many courses which in the end were out of my control.
3. I have no idea what I am doing and barely get advice from my professors.
4. I didn’t use the school resources like peer tutoring and always alone.
5. I didn’t update with my academic advisor constantly therefore I lost halfway through my study.
6. I didn’t pay attention to my mental health as well and didn’t realize how much it would impact my life.
7. I didn’t have strong motivation and confidence in my study.
For my future study, I am writing the plan based on my reality. Here are the 6 parts that I am planning to change:
1. I will change my plan from honor to general degree based on my current GPA.
2. I will reduce the course load from 5 classes to 3 classes to get a good GPA.
3. I am planning to take FILM 110&236&240 next semester to get accepted by the film major, meanwhile maintaining a 2.8+ GPA.
4. I will talk to the international academic advisor Daralyn Auld every week to keep on track on my study.
5. I will register for peer tutoring as well.
6. I will talk to the mental therapist that Daralyn recommended from school every other two weeks to make sure I don’t have a mental breakdown.
Therefore, I am ready to put a hundred percent effort into my next semester study. I would appreciate it so much if you gave me the chance to go back to school.
