Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I, Ella Larson, am writing to formally request a grade petition for my performance in PHYS 117. I have recently been made aware of the possibility to petition this grade based on special extenuating circumstances, for which I have attached supporting documentation.
I enrolled in PHYS 117 during the winter semester, and unfortunately, my grade did not reflect my true capabilities. However, it was only during a recent advising appointment in the summer of 2023 that I learned about the opportunity to petition my grade. I would like to bring to your attention the circumstances that led to my subpar performance in the course.
Throughout the duration of PHYS 117, I consistently demonstrated exceptional abilities in the laboratory exercises, indicating a strong understanding of the lecture material. However, my overall grade in the course does not accurately represent my knowledge and potential.
The primary factor affecting my academic performance was a scheduled surgery. This surgery coincided with the final exam for PHYS 117, leading me to write a deferred examination several months after the course had concluded. The months following my surgery were marked by a challenging recovery, increased anxiety, and a concerted effort to prepare for the deferred exam.
My anxiety and panic attacks have been a longstanding struggle, which was exacerbated by the surgery and compounded by the isolation and uncertainties of my first year at university during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, my regular therapist, who had been instrumental in managing my anxiety, was inaccessible after I moved to Canada from the United States. This situation made it exceedingly difficult to cope with the academic demands of the deferred exam and the transition to university life in general.
Currently, I am actively seeking treatment for my anxiety and panic attacks, including medication and regular therapy sessions. I am committed to overcoming these challenges and ensuring that they do not impede my academic progress moving forward.
I kindly request that you consider my extenuating circumstances and the supporting documentation I have provided in support of my grade petition for PHYS 117. I believe that my academic record does not accurately reflect my potential, and I am committed to proving my abilities in future courses.
Thank you for your time and consideration of my request. I hope for a favorable resolution that will allow me to move forward with my academic pursuits and demonstrate my true capabilities.
Sincerely,
Ella Larson
