Petition Letter: I am writing this letter to formally make aware of my circumstances that have pertained since the beginning of this year. This past year, I have been struggling severely with my mental health due to an array of separate issues that have all impacted my focus, motivation, and my emotions. My dads side of my family is prone to depression among other mental health issues that have affected him and my relatives. Sadly, this depression is what took my dad almost 5 years ago now while I was only the age of 14 starting my year in 10th grade. It has impacted my high school marks as well, and I have gone to numerous therapists and school counselors making my best effort to become stronger from this tragedy. As of the start of my first year of university in a new province, and going into this chapter at the young age of 17, I was not ready to undergo this triumph alone. I have realized that Counseling is and was a big part of what helped me through this time and a service that could keep me in check in avoidance of slipping grades. That is why this term I have started to regularly go in for counseling and throughout this summer I received a prescription for Biphentin which is a medication to help me keep focus which has been impacted by my mental health and my ADD. This last year has been quite rough on my mental health and I only feel more upset with myself that I have not been capable of completing any of these courses that I am requesting to drop. With the isolation of the cold weather in January making it difficult to get outside and get physical activity this only made my mental health deteriorate more from just being in a dark room far from home. I have spoken to counselor Ms. Emily Blacker, and I owe her many thanks for helping me with this process. Because of how I have been feeling this past year, it has affected me so much that I was not in the right mind enough to even hand a single assignment in for my summer courses. I simply picked up the courses, flew home in early May, and once I got home It got worse. This led to me not even starting my summer courses, and also led to me not even dropping them at all, as I was in such a bubble I did not go onto my laptop and tried to shut everything out. I wish I could have made different decisions however this is the way my life has gone and the only thing I can do now is attempt to make the right decisions going forward. Please consider my circumstances for the appeal of my winter and summer term courses. With these courses dropped I believe I can start this Fall 2023 term fresh with no weight on my shoulders from my previous terms including help from my new counselor, my new medication, and in a better mental state going into this term.
