Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am requesting to appeal PHIL 263 as a late drooped course based on the advice from my professor Jon Miller. I was an active participant and throughly enjoyed this course. However, I unfortunately sustained a concussion on Nov. 28, 2022 while training with the Queen's Varsity Figure Skating team. My concussion compromised my vision, mood, ability to focus as well as caused various other issues. These symptoms lasted well into early January. Due to my concussion I was unable to attend lectures, complete my required assignments, or final exams for that term. Majority of PHIL 263's course deadlines based on weight of grade were due after Nov. 28, 2022. Unlike my other courses from that fall term, I had not yet completed the sufficient amount of the course to receive an incomplete grade according to my professor.

Following my concussion I saw Q Sports Medicine at the ARC for treatment. I received a Verification of Extenuating Circumstances form from Q Sports Medicine on Nov. 29 with an anticipated duration of impact being 2-4 weeks. This was my seventh concussion, so my recovery ended up being more complicated then we initially anticipated. I attended four treatment sessions for my concussion at Q Sports Medicine where I was prescribed rehabilitation exercises for my vision. I was instructed to limit screen time and activities that provoked symptoms such as reading, writing and deep concentration. In addition to Q Sports Medicine I saw my counsellor Roger at Queen's Student Wellness to manage stress and mood related symptoms.

Due to the status of my health I returned home to Calgary prior to the winter break period to see a concussion specialist. My family took the matters of my health very seriously Since this was the seventh concussion I have sustained. While in Calgary I saw the concussion specialist five times. I was prescribed additional rehabilitation exercises and similar instruction to limit screen time and activities that provoked symptoms. I have since recovered and I am now retaking PHIL 263 with Jon Miller, but I would appreciate if I could remove the F from my transcript that would not have occurred had I not sustained a concussion.
