Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am writing this petition to request permission to study abroad at Curtin University for the winter semester of 2024. I am choosing to do this to broaden my university experience by living and studying in another country. While I am in Australia, I hope to dive into Aboriginal culture by learning their history and creative arts. I find aboriginal art absolutely beautiful and I am excited to learn to cultural significance of that style. Studying abroad will also be a wonderful opportunity for self-growth given I'll be going without previously knowing anybody. I believe it is extremely important to be in situations where I have no choice but to put myself out into the world and make an effort to meet new people and truly experience a different lifestyle.
Additionally, I am a New Zealand citizen who has not seen my family there for several years due to COVID-19. Being so close to New Zealand will also allow me to visit them and make up for the time we missed apart.

In terms of classes, I am a Global Development major and hope to take some equivalent classes in Australia in addition to cultural ones. Below is a list of potential classes I would like to take and their Queen's equivalencies )if applicable):
- Curtin course: VISA1003 DRAWING
Queen’s Equivalent: ARTF100
- Curtin course: VISA1004 FINE ART STUDIO METHODS
Queen’s Equivalent: ARTF260
- Curtin course: MGMT ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR
Queen’s Equivalent: EMPR270
- Curtin course: HIST3000 HISTORY OF WARFARE AND THE EVOLUTION OF CONFLICT
Queen’s Equivalent: HIST109
- Curtin course: SCWK3004 WORKING IN HUMAN SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS
Queen’s Equivalent: DEVS358
- Curtin course: HIST3000 HISTORY OF NATIONALISM AND NATION-MAKING
Queen’s Equivalent: HIST478
- Curtin course: Australian art
- Curtin course: Entrepreneurship
Queen's Equivalent: Enin 200

I will be showing the above courses to my department's chair to discuss which ones are recommended for me to take to ensure I am on track for graduation. I have already ensured that many of the courses encompass topics that are covered in Global Development.
At Curtin University, I can take up to 4 classes per term, therefore, I will choose from one of the options with the help of recommendations from the DEVS chairman.

A problem I will face if I go on exchange is that I will be unable to take my two mandatory 3rd-year DEVS courses (DEVS 300 and 340) because they are only offered in the winter semester. My plan is to take these courses during the winter semester of my fourth year in addition to my other mandatory courses (DEVS 492). I will discuss this further with the chair of my department to ensure I get a place in these classes in time for graduation.
