Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am writing to request to take my 3rd year, second semester, away at another university. The opportunity to study abroad will allow for a number of academic and enriching opportunities including cultural exposure, unique academic opportunities, personal growth, language skill development, and more. To begin with, the chance to study in the Netherlands would allow me to immerse myself in a completely unfamiliar culture and environment. This is a unique opportunity to observe and embrace cultural distinctions that would otherwise remain unexplored.

Furthermore, it would be a privilege to study at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, a world-renowned university, and participate in academic courses that are not offered at Queens. This will enhance my understanding of subjects that I already have an interest in and may also introduce me to new ones.

Moreover, living independently in a foreign country will serve as a catalyst for personal growth. Going abroad will push me to step outside of my comfort zone and motivate me to overcome obstacles I may not otherwise encounter. The skills and lessons that I will take away from this experience will have lasting effects on both my academic career and my future endeavours.

Finally, although I have little familiarity with Dutch, the primary language in the Netherlands, studying abroad will help me learn a new language. Having the opportunity to be immersed in the language will provide me with the best form of linguistic learning. This newly acquired skill will become invaluable as I can rely on it when travelling to other parts of the world where Dutch is spoken and can enhance my career prospects in the future.

Therefore, studying abroad will provide me with a unique academic opportunity, lasting personal growth skills and an immersive cultural experience.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I wish to take 12 credits while studying abroad, these courses include Emotion and Social Cognition, Sensation and Perception, Small Business Development, and Judaism.

Both Emotion and Social Cognition and Sensation and Perception will contribute to the progression of my degree, as they will act as credits for social and cognitive psychology at the 300 level. These psychology courses will provide me with a more in-depth understanding of both social and cognitive psychology that is not offered at Queens. As well, I have also obtained permission from Dr. Norris regarding these courses, to ensure that they fit properly into my degree plan.

After meeting with my academic advisor, I now know that I have one additional business-related credit that can act as an elective in my degree plan. Small Business Development aligns perfectly with both my personal interests and future career plans. This course is unique to Vrije University as it provides further insight into the inner workings of small businesses, something that no course at Queen’s delves into.

Finally, Judaism falls under the Department of Sociology and will act as an elective toward my degree. This course will help me reconnect with my Jewish roots as I have not had the opportunity to do this thus far in my academic career. Being able to learn more about what Judaism means will help me learn more about my history and how I view Judaism in the future. While there are Jewish-related courses at Queen’s none offer a general overview of Judaism.

To conclude, two of the courses I plan to enroll in will count toward my degree plan in Psychology and the other two courses will act as electives. All these courses are unique to this university and will further my academic knowledge while helping me discover my future career path.

Also, while this constitutes a reduced course load, I have discussed this topic with my academic advisor and it does not seem to be an issue, as I am in good academic standing regarding my required courses and all other supplementary courses may be taken later in my degree plan (such as in the summer term or in fourth year).
