Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom it May Concern

I am writing this letter to petition that my three late BIO111 assignments that were submitted before the end of the 2023 winter term be marked and included in my final grade for the course.

The circumstances for my petition are as follows:

Over the course of the winter term, I experienced a significant mental health situation that affected my ability to complete the steps requesting academic consideration at the time. I have 3 ungraded assignments that were submitted late that I am requesting to be marked. While the circumstances for each assignment differed slightly, the consistent theme was that my mental health impaired my ability to go through the process of requesting academic consideration at the time. Please find attached the letter from my counselling psychologist verifying my health situation.

The specifics for each assignment are as follows:

Assignment #1: I joined BIO111 several weeks into the course (Jan 25), completed the first assignment that was due prior to me joining the class. I asked Dr. Orihel if I could complete the assignments that I had missed, and she asked me to go through the academic consideration process to get my assignment marked; I was unable to follow through on this due to my health situation.

Assignment #2: I completed this assignment a day past the deadline, so I emailed it to the designated course email. Since the submission deadline was during reading week, many other students failed to submit their assignments, so Dr. Oriehl decided to reopen the portal for the class with no penalty. This was the peak time of my mental health situation and since I had emailed in my assignment and thought I’d already submitted it, I failed to resubmit it through the portal while it was reopened.

Assignment #3: I missed the submission of this assignment related to the overwhelm of my mental health situation but submitted it before the end of the term.

I have spoken with Dr. Orihel a few times after class about these assignments, and she was receptive to my requests in-person and asked me to email her with the details to remind her. In the last week of April I re-emailed Dr. Orihel the 3 completed assignments and asked if she would still consider marking them as we had discussed in person. She said she would get back to me with a response, but I never heard from her again. For the first part of summer I had limited computer access. When I followed up with her again in August (when I had better computer access), her email notification said that she’s gone on sabbatical. So, now I am not sure who best to address my request to.

I worked hard to learn the course material and complete the assignments during a very challenging term for me health-wise, and would greatly appreciate it if they could still be marked. Cumulatively, they will have a significant impact on my final grade in the course (approximately from C+ to A-).

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or need more information.
Sincerely
Zara Smith
