Petition Letter: Request for Course Drop Due to Severe Concussion - Fall 2023 Semester
Dear Dean Jenn Stephenson,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to appeal for a course drop for the Fall 2023 semester, specifically for the courses GPHY 304, DEVS 363, GPHY 310, and GPHY 369. I am enrolled in six courses at this time and will be left with two classes following this process; DEVS 392 and GPHY 336. I am currently facing a challenging situation as a result of a severe concussion that occurred on October 28th, 2023. This unfortunate incident has significantly impacted my ability to focus and complete my academic responsibilities.
The severity of the concussion has rendered me unable to function properly for several weeks, impeding my capacity to keep up with coursework and academic demands. Despite my efforts to resume normal activities, I find myself struggling to concentrate and perform at the level required for a full-term course load. In light of these circumstances, I believe it is in my best interest to drop these four courses, allowing me to redirect my energy toward a slower-paced recovery and a more gradual return to my studies.
To provide a clearer understanding of the timeline and gravity of my situation, the concussion occurred on October 28th, 2023. In the subsequent weeks, I have been undergoing a gradual recovery process, with the lingering effects impacting my cognitive abilities and focus as well as a diminished sense of morale affecting my mental health. Currently, I am seeking professional help through weekly concussion therapy at the Kingston Athletic Therapy Center (KATC) to facilitate my rehabilitation and ensure a comprehensive recovery. Along with this, I complete daily exercises to improve my eye strength and brain function.
The specific impact of these extenuating circumstances on my academic performance is evident in my inability to cope with a full course load. As a result, I fear that attempting to manage all six courses simultaneously would not only compromise the quality of my work but also hinder my overall recovery. Consequently, I am compelled to seek your understanding and support in dropping these courses to alleviate the academic strain during this challenging period.
My proposed plan is to drop the mentioned courses and, if permissible, take them during the subsequent Fall semester or any equivalent offering. While this would extend my academic journey to a total of 4.5 years, I firmly believe it is a necessary step for my overall well-being and recovery. By spacing out my coursework, I aim to avoid overwhelming my brain and prevent any potential setbacks in my health.
I kindly request your consideration of my appeal and approval of the course drop, allowing me the time and space needed for a comprehensive recovery. I have attached the necessary documentation and medical certificates to support my case further. Your understanding and support during this challenging time are greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Senna Fabricius
