Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean and office,
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I am writing to you in concerns of late dropping two of my five courses from this semester (Fall 2023) which are BIOL 330 and BIOL 350.
This has been an unusually challenging semester for me based on extenuating circumstances that have occurred in recent months. In previous academic years, I have struggled with being diagnosed with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and atypical anorexia nervosa. Despite these setbacks, I was resilient throughout and continued my studies despite being in program at Hotel Dieu for these health concerns.
However, just before school began again this term, I experienced the loss of a very close friend followed by my two paternal grandparents. I spent my birthday at the funeral of a loved one, and the months meant to prepare for school mentally and physically in mourning. Nevertheless, I wanted to finish my studies this year and graduate with my Bachelor’s of Science with Honours in biopsychology. I tried to postpone by grief, as though that is possible, and distract myself with school.
Then, when another dear friend of mine passed in October after being missing for twenty-four hours, I knew I wouldn’t be able to bottle up my feelings anymore. Although I did try to continue my studies without asking for help, I could only do that for so long. In early November I spoke with my doctor and she and I agreed that a week of academic consideration was the best next step for me to rethink what I would be able to do this year towards my studies.
After discussing options with academic advisors and my support system, I believe what's best for me is to drop two of my courses and focus on doing my best in the other three. I am hoping that in light of my extenuating circumstances you will approve my request to late drop these courses so that I may be able to finish the remainder of my classes without overworking myself during my period of mourning.
By dropping these two very challenging courses, I feel I will be able to focus my attention on my other three classes and succeed in them.
Please let me know if there is any more information or supporting documentation I can provide. I have attached the obituaries for three of these deaths as they were the ones published online, however my Grandmama's obituary was not. Additionally my friend who passed in October has not had his published officially because his family also recently lost his father and are going through many difficulties, but I included the obituary written by his school
Thank you for your consideration,
