Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Crow,

With a heavy heart, I'm reaching out for your understanding and assistance. I'm a second-year student in ARTH 214, and I've recently found myself in a challenging situation which has severely impacted my academic performance. The purpose of this letter is to formally petition for a withdrawal from this course due to the recent passing of a very close family member.

Just over two weeks ago, my uncle passed away. This loss has been devastating for my mental state, as well as for my workload. The grief and mental strain have been overwhelming, making it extremely difficult to concentrate, study, or complete assignments effectively. I've also struggled to attend class. This has rung especially true in ARTH 214, as we had an essay due only a couple of days after we received the news of my uncle.

After scoring a zero on this paper and talking with Prof. Hoeniger, she recommended I drop this course if I continue to struggle with attendance [and balancing my course load as a whole]. Although I have done my very best, the mental and emotional strain has made it difficult for me to function at the level I am usually able to. I believe I must withdraw from this course in order to focus on my mental health and stop my academic record from further deteriorating.

I will continue to work through this situation; I realize how important it is that I get back on track and prioritize my academics. I'm 18 years old, and this is my first time dealing with grief, so this is all very new to me. If you approve this request, I will use the extra time to balance the rest of my courses and recover as quickly as possible. My biggest goals are to finish this semester strong and prepare myself for a full course load in January. I also plan on making up for these credits over the summer.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review my request,

Ryan Hamilton
