Letter of Petition for credit standing
To whom it may concern,
My name is Michelle Macdonald, and I am writing to respectfully request a credit standing for the class ASTR 101. I have encountered several challenges throughout the course of the semester that have affected my academic performance.
One primary concern is the personal challenges this semester. Prior to the start of the academic year, I was diagnosed with ADHD, and finding suitable medication has been a time-consuming process due to my doctor being located in Canada while I am in England, apart of Bader College. This had impacted me within this class due to not being able to attain the information provided by my professor in the same way that other students may have the ability to do. Considering my major at the time, being global development, I had never taken a course similar to astronomy, therefore I was not used to the content nor the way my professor chose to teach.
By the dropped deadline, I had only received one mark within the course and still had hope of getting a good grade.
In addition to receiving limited feedback on graded work, I experienced inconsistencies in the information provided by our professor. For example, when using outside sources such as NASA, as suggested by the professor, students were later criticized for doing so. We were then instructed to rely solely on class notes for our assignments which, unfortunately, did not yield better results. Alongside having ADHD, and trying to abide by what my professor asked of me, I found it struggling and confusing as to how the professor wanted me to write assignments.
Another concern is the lack of guidance and clarity in the feedback provided by the professor on assignments and exams. Despite my best efforts to meet assignment requirements and answer all questions, I consistently received low marks. Furthermore, the feedback given was vague and insufficient, making it challenging for me to improve my performance. Having my diagnosis and not getting the help needed caused me to lack the confidence to succeed within the course. It was obvious that I was at a disadvantage compared to other students who could learn and attain the information our professor had given and successfully completed assignments with better marks.
Given these circumstances, I firmly believe that granting me a credit standing is a fair resolution. I remain committed to pursuing my education and recognize that these challenges have affected my ability to succeed in this particular course.
