Petition Letter

Petition Letter: November 25, 2023
To Whom it May Concern,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to formally petition for permission to withdraw from the CHEM 281 course past the established deadline due to unforeseen and extenuating circumstances that have significantly impacted my ability to reach my academic potential.

On November 2nd, 2023, two days prior to my CHEM 281 midterm, I experienced a traumatic incident that has had significant effects on my ability to concentrate and focus on my academic demands. While at Goode's Hall, I fainted, resulting in a head injury as I hit the concrete floor. Promptly seeking medical attention, I was advised to take iron supplements. Subsequently, I began to exhibit symptoms of concussion, including a persistent headache, stiff neck, and difficulty looking at screens.

Concerned about the severity of my symptoms, I sought out further medical consultation at Hotel Dieu Urgent Care on November 5th, 2023. During this visit, I expressed worries about meningitis due to a sore throat and stiff neck. In response to my concerns, a throat swab was conducted. On the morning of November 7th, I received an unexpected diagnosis of strep throat. The doctor prescribed a ten-day course of antibiotics, which, despite completion, has not fully alleviated my symptoms. Following the mild concussion and diagnosis of strep throat, I have been putting my health first, ensuring to take time away from screens, get ample rest, and limit my physical activity.

As a consequence of these health challenges, my ability to meet academic obligations has been severely compromised. While my TAs and professors have demonstrated understanding by granting extensions, the impact on my academic performance, especially in the case of the CHEM 281 midterm, has been substantial.

The midterm occurred just two days after the incident when I was unaware of the severity of my head injury. Unprepared and uncomfortable due to a pounding headache and screen discomfort, I attempted the exam, resulting in a grade of 54. This grade differs substantially from my usual academic performance. Since then, I have faced difficulties catching up with lectures and assignments, which has further impeded my success in CHEM 281.

I am seeking approval to drop CHEM 281 to mitigate the impact of these circumstances on my overall academic standing. Doing so would afford me the opportunity to focus on my remaining courses, where I can devote the necessary time and attention to ensure academic success.

I understand the importance of adhering to university policies, but I believe the specific nature of my situation deserves a compassionate review of my request. I sincerely appreciate your time and consideration of my petition. I am more than willing to provide any additional information if required. Thank you for your understanding and support during this challenging time.

Thank you,
Brooklyn Fowlie (20237537)
