Petition Letter

Petition Letter: My name is Natalie Garcia and I am in my first year of studies at Queen’s University. I am currently in the Faculty of Arts and Science. I am enrolled in 5 courses this semester. One of them is Film 111.
I have struggled with anxiety most of my life and have had many of my issues in academic and social settings. Throughout high school, teachers have given me informal accommodations to help deal with my anxiety. I constantly felt ill and anxious while at school. In my final year of high school, I began treatment for my anxiety which eventually began to help me a great deal. This past summer I received a psychological assessment and I was formally diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The assessment also showed that I had signs of ADHD, however it was unclear whether these signs were triggered by my anxiety.
I began university at Queen’s with the mindset of a fresh start in the hopes of having an extremely successful and happy 4 years of study. Therefore, I decided to try to take on 5 full courses. The film course I am in takes place on Mondays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Due to the scheduling of the course, I was only able to attend one lecture before making my decision on whether or not to drop the course. I had difficulty following the first lecture, but decided that perhaps it was my anxiety about taking a new course and that stress of the first week of classes maybe was interfering with my focus. I continued to attend the lectures but found it extremely difficult to concentrate at that time of day and for that period of time on a topic that I was unfamiliar with. It became harder and harder for me to follow the course and grasp an understanding of the material. Because of my anxiety, I felt overwhelmed and did not know how to seek out help. I have always had difficulty talking to new people and advocating for myself. I have recently applied for accommodations with QSAS as I realize that I need some help. I also recently went to see my doctor who diagnosed me with ADHD in mid November. I have begun taking medication to assist with my focus and I am sure that this was a major factor in my difficulty following the film course. The medication that I am taking must be taken gradually and it takes several weeks to find the correct dosage.
I am requesting to be able to drop the film course, as I have not been able to adequately complete it due to my issues with focus and anxiety. I have attached two letters. One is from the psychologist who diagnosed me with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and one is from my doctor who recently diagnosed me with ADHD.
I appreciate your time and assistance.
Sincerely,

Natalie Garcia
