Petition Letter: This is my request to drop BIOL102. I am a first-year student at Queens and have been studying at Bader College in England.
The reason for my late request to drop this course is very personal and difficult for me to write about. I suffered a sexual assault on Oct 6, 2023. This is something I have not reported to the authorities and only told my mother. The consequences of this assault have been devastating to me. I will not be going into any details but will say that the perpetrator was not a Queens student or employee, he lives in a local town.
After this event all of my studies completely went off the rails. I have dropped three of my other courses and was really hoping to be able to perform in my biology course but couldn’t manage to keep up with any of my work or assignments. I have ASD and I think that this affected my ability to process what happened to me and work through it without the supports that I would normally have back in Canada.
I am very embarrassed with my academic performance this year. I was the Governor General award recipient at my high school and have always prioritized my schooling.
My mother urged me to see a doctor and get counselling when I told her what happened. She respected my decision not to tell anyone else. She is very familiar with sexual assault investigations and prosecutions and knew that deciding to talk about this was my choice. Because of the remote location of Bader and the limited availability of doctors and counsellors, I did not feel safe in getting counselling. It was also very difficult at Bader to arrange to see a doctor which was very frightening to me.
I know that I have up to 800 words for this request but am hoping that this fully explains my situation. I am very hopeful you will allow me to drop BIOL102. Finally, I understand that some administrators will need to see this request, but could you please keep this confidential. I haven’t told anyone else about my situation and it is extremely important to me that no one else learns about this.
