Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am requesting an appeal to waive the 21-day petition deadline to drop my Winter 2022 courses. The courses being: CLST 130, GEOL 104, MATH 112, POLS 110B, and STAT 263.

My first year of university was an unfortunate series of bad luck coupled with bad decisions on my part; my underlying conditions, the pandemic's affect on mental health, and my own lack of sensible decisions led to my failure.
I was diagnosed with several mental health conditions when I was young, but my struggles came to be manageable for me through my life. But because of extenuating mental and physical health problems I struggled to keep up. I dropped all of my Fall 2021 courses but I tried to return to my studies but the struggles became increasingly difficult and my mental health and anxiety prevented me from asking for assistance. I was consumed by my mental health issues and I was unable to see clearly. In August I went away to a residential mental health facility where I stayed for a year, during which time I was unable to gain access to resources like my email, or phone in order to be able to drop my courses.

Since spending a year away focusing on my self and my growth I have come to take responsibility for my actions and the mistakes I've made in the past. It is my intention to hold myself accountable going forward; and that means in the little things too. I will not only carefully manage my workload but I will also take time for self-care to nurture my mental health. I will also maintain regular meetings with medical professionals to uphold my positive mental demeanor. Now that I am more mature and have grown from the experiences of the past I know that I can better manage any issues that come my way.

Thank you for your time, I appreciate your consideration.

Thank you,
Nayyab Cheema
