Petition Letter:
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to seek your approval to complete my final year of studies at the University of Toronto. This request stems from a series of extenuating circumstances that have significantly impacted my academic journey and personal well-being.
Background and Challenges:
As a dedicated student and a single mother, I have consistently strived to balance my academic responsibilities with personal challenges. My journey at Queen's University has been marked by both achievements and obstacles. Notably, my second year was transformed by the birth of my child, introducing new dimensions of responsibility and financial strain into my life.
Additionally, my experiences with ADHD and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) have posed unique challenges in a traditional university setting. These difficulties have been further compounded by postpartum depression following my child's birth.
Impact on Academic Performance:
The cumulative effect of these challenges has had a tangible impact on my academic performance and overall well-being. While I have strived to maintain my academic standing, the pressures of parenting, financial constraints, and mental health struggles have made it increasingly difficult to sustain this balance.
Experience at the University of Toronto:
During my third year at the University of Toronto, I found a supportive environment that significantly enhanced my academic engagement and performance. Access to a familiar support system, including family, friends, and my church community, has been instrumental in this positive change. Living at home has not only eased financial burdens but has also provided me with the stability and support necessary to excel academically.
Request for the Final Year Transfer:
Given these experiences and the notable improvement in my academic engagement and mental health, I respectfully request permission to complete my final year at the University of Toronto. This decision is not made lightly but is driven by a clear understanding of the environment and the support I need to succeed as a student and a mother.
Commitment to Academic Excellence:
I am fully committed to maintaining my academic excellence and completing my degree. I have demonstrated this commitment by planning to take additional courses during the summer, ensuring that I remain on track to graduate on time.
Closing Remarks:
Taking a LOP at the University of Toronto for my final year represents more than a logistical change; it is a necessary step towards achieving my academic goals while ensuring the well-being of my child and myself. As a first-generation university student, this opportunity is not just about personal achievement but also about setting a precedent of resilience and determination for my child. I am so close to the finish line, and being able to take an LOP has been such a blessing in my life. After I had my son I thought for sure I would need to drop out and forget my dream of completing a degree. The help and support I have received from Queens University have made my dreams a reality.
Thank you for considering my petition. I am excited to continue my academic journey and achieve my goals with your support.
Sincerely,
Makayla Kelly

Academic Plan
Academic Plan:
Introduction:
This plan is designed to outline my academic pathway for the upcoming year, considering my personal circumstances and the support I will receive at the University of Toronto.
A. Course of Study:
Summer 2024: Enroll in 3 online summer courses through Queens University to ensure I am keeping up with the amount of credits needed to graduate.
Fall 2024 Term: Enroll in 4 courses relevant to my major, focusing on core and elective requirements.
Winter 2024 Term: Continue with another set of 4 courses, ensuring a balance between major-specific and general education requirements.
B. Workload Management:
Full-Time Enrollment: Given my responsibilities as a single parent and the need to manage my mental health effectively, I plan to maintain a Full-time course load, but take less than five courses.
Summer Term: Enroll in summer courses to compensate for the reduced load during the regular terms, as successfully done in the 2022 summer term.
C. Strategies for Success:
Support System: Leverage the support of family, friends, and my church community for both personal and academic needs.
Mental Health Management: Continue to access mental health resources and counselling services to manage postpartum depression and ADHD.
Time Management: Employ effective time management strategies to balance academic
responsibilities with parenting.
Academic Resources: Utilize the University of Toronto's academic resources, including tutoring services, study groups, and academic advisors.
D. Addressing Challenges:

Personal Circumstances: Continue to engage with mental health professionals and seek support from my personal network for managing personal challenges.
