Petition Letter: My grandmother has had Alzheimer's for 5 years now. This summer, she began to rapidly decline, becoming violent with her care workers, unable to understand her surroundings, unable remember the people around her, etc.
At the beginning of this term was the first time we were told her time was over, as she was ill (fever, unable to eat food, unable to use the washroom, etc.), so I visited her and said goodbye. She then recovered, and we were told she had more time. Since then, we have been told two times that she was again going to pass (late September/early October, and end of November) as she became sick again, and that we should say our goodbyes.
I have been struggling mentally as she was a primary maternal figure in my life, and the uncertainty of when she is going to pass will occur. Her state has also caused other childhood trauma, in terms of family dynamics and violence, to be triggered. I struggle with brain fog, depression, and intense anxiety. I have found it very difficult to find motivation, or to think about anything other than her current state, and when and if she is going to pass. I find it difficult to comprehend what I am reading, or remember things that I have learnt. I found it difficult to complete assignments, quizzes, and keep up with the general demand of schoolwork. I struggle with zoning in and out of what I would call a dissociative state.
Since the summer, I have been receiving therapy through student services to help with the grief, anxiety, and sadness, but it is difficult to deal with as it seems that as it gets better, her health changes.
