Petition Letter

Petition Letter: My name is Samara Hurowitz, and I am a fourth year Global Development Student.

I am writing this formal petition to request to drop the elective course I have taken this semester, POLS 243. On November 15th I submitted a term paper worth 40% of my overall mark and received a C-. I only obtained this grade on December 11th, 26 days after this paper was submitted, and 3 days prior to my exam. This course has a 40% exam on December 14th meaning I was unaware of 80% of my grade up until I received this grade. Before receiving this grade, I had no knowledge I was in such poor academic standing in this course. Additionally, I had only submitted 5% of my overall grade prior to the October 30th drop deadline, meaning I was unable to make an informed decision at that point on whether I should or shouldn’t drop my course.

I am deeply concerned that I will not be able to finish this course with a grade that will not harm my GPA so I would like to drop this course and obtain a DR on my transcript. This summer I took RELS 131 which provided me with 6 extra credits. As I will be taking a full course load next semester, I will still have 3 extra units of undergraduate credit when I graduate if I drop POLS 243.

I also would like to explain the reason I am so passionate about dropping this course. I have applied to Law Schools for September 2024 and believe that a low mark in this course will greatly harm my GPA and my chances of being accepted to one of these programs. I am confident that a low grade in this course will harbour significant implications on my application process, especially for schools that will be looking at my last 10 credits. I would desperately like to drop this course as this semester has been extremely stressful and exceptionally hard on my mental health. I have also thought about appealing my grade on my paper, but I am quite confident that even if I am able to have this mark raised slightly, I will still underperform in this course. I believe that my transcript reflects that I am not a C student and would be beyond grateful if this course could change to a DR.

My university career has taught me the importance of strategic, analytical thinking. As my objective at this point in 4th year is to obtain acceptance into Law School, I have taken the time to consider whether a DR on my transcript is the best option for me, and I greatly believe it is.

I greatly appreciate your time in reviewing my course drop application.
