To Whom it may concern:

I am petitioning Professor Jade Standing’s grade decision on the term fall essay for ENGL259, Global Shakespeare.

In Dr. Standing’s feedback for my essay, she states that my thesis is not argumentative, and that I explore too many themes and I should focus on one key topic. However, my topic that I chose was clearly related to politics in the Al-Hamlet summit, and my examples of these politics and issues in Middle Eastern culture specifically stated in the introduction that “the al-Hamlet summit has been curated to highlight political messages that pertain to Arab culture”. I was clear in my introduction that the Al-hamlet summit exacerbates themes of the original Hamlet and combines them with Middle-Eastern culture.
The essay question regarding politics itself ask the question: how is the [Al-hamlet summit] and Hamlet different in terms of their representation of power.
Within this essay, I explain that Hamlet itself deals with Patriarchal inequality, and deals with corruption in the ruling class. One of Dr. Standings comments was that I don’t prove that Al-Bassam focused on corruption more than the original hamlet, but my argument specifically explains that that foreign influence is corruption, in different ways.
One of Dr. Standing’s comments also says that I was citing Al-Bassam’s dissertation instead of the play, but in every paragraph, I use multiple lines of analyses directly from the play.
Also, Dr. Standing says in MLA format I should not have a title page, but I believe in MLA format one should have a title page.

Thank you for your time,
Ethan Ferwerda
