Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am writing to formally appeal for permission to swap my course, HIST 109, to LLCU 111 after the official drop deadline of January 19, 2024. I understand that this is an extraordinary request, and I appreciate your time and consideration in reviewing my appeal.

I am appealing to drop HIST 109 due to a realization that it does not align with my academic interests, and the challenges I have encountered in the course are proving to be overwhelming in the current term. I enrolled in HIST 109 with the expectation that it would complement my academic goals, but upon further engagement, I have realized that my passion lies elsewhere, particularly in the LLCU 111 course.

I am aware of the university policy regarding course swaps after the drop deadline, and I fully acknowledge that such requests are typically not entertained. However, I hope to convey the extenuating circumstances that have led me to this decision, as well as outline my plan to mitigate any potential impact on my academic performance.
To explain my situation, during the first weeks of the semester, I encountered unexpected personal challenges that significantly impacted my ability to focus on my coursework. Unfortunately, these challenges are sensitive, and I would prefer not to disclose the specific details. However, I can provide the relevant start and end dates to demonstrate the time frame during which these challenges were most acute.

The impact of these circumstances on my academic performance, especially in the case of HIST 109, has been profound. The challenges I am currently facing have made it difficult for me to keep up with the course readings and lectures. This struggle has manifested in my ability to actively engage in class discussions. Despite my efforts, I find myself feeling exhausted by the demands of the course, which has further compounded my academic challenges. In recognition of the strain these difficulties have placed on my ability to effectively participate in the class, I have sought support from the university's counseling services. I am actively working with counselors to develop coping strategies, but the difficulty in managing the course materials has prompted me to reconsider my academic plan for this term.

To address the challenges I have faced and to ensure a more successful academic experience moving forward, I have made a plan. This plan includes seeking ongoing support from counseling services, adjusting my overall course load to a more manageable level, and engaging with professors/TAs to catch up on missed content.

Recognizing the importance of staying connected with my studies, I have taken the initiative to explore alternative courses that align better with my academic interests and career goals. LLCU 111, offered online, provides the flexibility I need to navigate my challenges while remaining committed to my academic responsibilities. I am confident that this course swap will let me regain control over my academic journey and contribute positively to the university community. I am fully committed to making up for any missed coursework in LLCU 111 and ensuring that my academic performance reflects my true ability.

In conclusion, I understand the gravity of my request and appreciate the university's commitment to maintaining academic policies. However, I sincerely hope that my extenuating circumstances, coupled with a proactive and well-thought-out plan for the future, will be taken into consideration when evaluating my appeal. I am more than willing to provide any additional documentation or meet with the relevant authorities to discuss my situation further.

Thank you for your time and understanding. I look forward to a favorable resolution to my appeal.
Sincerely,
Anh Thu Nguyen

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: A. Course of Study:
I am currently a first-year student, majoring in Psychology. I have reviewed my Academic Advisement Report in SOLUS to ensure a clear understanding of my remaining degree requirements. I am confident that this degree plan aligns with my academic and career goals.

B. Full-time vs Part-time:
Considering my current situation, I acknowledge the importance of aligning my course selection with a balanced and manageable workload. While I understand that full-time enrollment constitutes 9.0 units per term, I intend to maintain this load. However, in light of the challenges faced during the previous academic session, I am opting to replace HIST 109 with LLCU 111 to ensure a more focused and successful return to my studies. I am confident in my ability to effectively manage my time and will seek additional support as needed to excel in the revised course arrangement.

C. Strategies for Success:

Academic Demands:
I encountered difficulties with course content in the past, particularly in keeping up with readings and lectures. To address this, I plan to seek regular advice from professors and attend office hours. I will also explore resources such as the Peer Mentor Program and ASUS Peer Tutoring.

Academic Interests:
Reflecting on my experiences, my academic interests align better with sociological knowledge, including cultural studies. I will discuss alternative plans with an academic advisor to ensure a more fulfilling academic experience.

Academic Skills & Work Habits:
Acknowledging challenges in time management and study habits, I will consult with a learning strategist in Student Academic Success Services and participate in workshops to enhance my academic skills. I am committed to self-reflection and continuous improvement.

Personal Circumstances:
I have experienced unforeseen events and realizations that have impacted my academic responsibilities. I am actively utilizing the Academic Consideration Request Portal (ACRP) and the Academic Petition Portal to address the effects of these circumstances. I am realistic about the long-term effects and am adjusting my academic goals accordingly with the guidance of an academic advisor.

Financial Resources:
I am currently seeking additional job opportunities to cover any remaining gaps in my financial resources. I will seek guidance from Student Awards for potential financial aid options and consult with an advisor at Student Academic Success Services to effectively balance my job commitments and academic responsibilities. This proactive approach aims to ensure a well-managed financial strategy while pursuing my academic goals.
