Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Academic Petitions Committee,

My name is Elisa Su. I am a first-year commerce student and am writing this petition to request the addition of either MATH 126 or MATH 121 as a course to my current timetable.

The reasoning for this request is due to my recent decision to apply to transfer to a US institution. However, the University I was interested in required a prerequisite Calculus course. As a commerce major, I realized that the curriculum covered in my COMM 161 class in the first semester was insufficient to meet the teaching points of the required Calculus background the program requires. After speaking with various Queen's math professors, they suggested I enroll in either MATH 126 or 121.

I missed the original course addition deadline as I only learned of this specific math requirement on January 24. Having only decided to transfer on January 22, I was three days late to the deadline. I have always been passionate about learning, and deciding to transfer has been a big decision for me. Thus, I will be deeply grateful if given this opportunity to have a chance in pursuing higher education.

I understand that adding a course late will require extra effort and commitment. However, I can succeed. My conviction stems from taking both of my required electives for commerce within the first semester and still achieving a 3.5 GPA and A in my commerce Calculus course, COMM 161.

I have a strong track record in math and am accustomed to academic rigor through taking all IB courses and SL Math IB in high school. The past semester, I was also able to balance a private equity winter internship and four commerce mentorship programs and compete within the badminton club at Queens in addition to my academic workload.

I am taking fewer courses in commerce than my peers, having fulfilled all my electives in the first semester. Thus, having MATH 126/121 will be manageable for me to take on.

As MATH 126/121 is a full-year course, I would like to know if my credits from COMM 161 can transfer into the course, and I will be happy to conduct inquiries with more professors to find a plausible solution.

I deeply appreciate your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Elisa
