Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Academic Appeals Committee,
I am writing to appeal the decision regarding my incomplete coursework due to circumstances beyond my control for ECON 430 in the Winter 2023 term.
On July 14, I experienced a life threatening crisis that necessitated hospitalization. During my time in the hospital, I was diagnosed with a disorder that required intensive treatment and monitoring (which I hope to keep private unless instructed to by your team). As a result, I spent nearly eight months in a psychiatric hospital, focusing on my recovery and stabilization.
During the winter 2023 semester, severe symptoms like hallucinations and delusions led me to seek external support, as well as academic accommodations through QSAS. Despite this support, I couldn't engage in or complete coursework for ECON 430. Consequently, I met with Professor Ian Keay at semester's end to discuss potential extensions into the summer of 2023. I was given an incomplete, and discussed submitting the work throughout the summer, however, Professor Keay would only allow this if I submitted supporting documentation. After providing supporting documentation on July 14, he granted extensions, allowing me to submit my essay by July 16 and schedule a mid-term exam retake for September 1, 2023. However, due to hospitalization during that period, I couldn't fulfill these requirements on time, resulting in an F in the course.
Recognizing the importance of fulfilling academic obligations, I am fully committed to completing the coursework and meeting all necessary academic requirements for ECON 430, and have already reached out to professor Keay who is teaching the course again this semester, and I plan to complete the course essay and mid-term exam within the timeline that you determine is appropriate.
To support my appeal, I have enclosed documentation from my healthcare providers detailing the severity of my condition, the treatment received, and my current status. Additionally, I am willing to provide any further information or documentation required to substantiate my appeal.
I can't overstate the importance of completing this course, as it is one of the final core course requirement for my Honours degree at Queen's University. As an international student who has already paid for the course and spent the last four years at Queen's, fulfilling this requirement is crucial for my academic journey. I sincerely hope you will consider my circumstances with compassion and understanding.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to a favorable resolution to my appeal.
Sincerely,
Saif Alzraigat
