Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
I am a first year Kinesiology student. I am submitting a first level petition request for credit standing in the KNPE 153 course (Section 006) from the Fall 2023 semester due to an extended physical illness I suffered.
During the week before final exams in December 2023, I initially fell quite sick around December 2nd. I had a bad cough along with major sinus congestion which became worse over the next few days, so I went to see the on-campus doctor on December 4, 2023. He evaluated me and gave doctor’s note (for extenuating circumstances), prescribed a nasal spray, and gave a chest x-ray requisition in case I did not feel better after one week. Later that same evening, my mom came to campus to pick me up so she could care for me at home (Toronto). As a result of the illness and not being able to study at all, I had to defer 3 final exams that were scheduled in December. My symptoms improved slightly over Christmas, but later over the winter break, my symptoms worsened again especially fever and cough. I ended up getting a chest x-ray and also an appointment with my family physician (December 27, 2023). He informed me that I likely still had an upper respiratory virus. By the first week of January, the fever went away but the cough and congestion did not and still lingered on. Most evenings I had a buildup of phlegm and extreme fatigue. I did not feel that I had recovered from the virus at all.
Despite still feeling ill and fatigued, I came back to campus on January 7th and began attending the new semester classes and also preparing for the 3 deferred final exams hoping that I would recover before the exams started. I managed to write the first two exams on January 11th and 12th from 7-10pm but by the time of the 3rd exam on January 13th, I was severely ill again with fever, sinus congestion, and cough which felt like a complete relapse of the December virus. Regardless, I proceeded to write the KNPE 153 exam since I thought I could not defer the exam a second time. I will submit copies of the doctor's notes and prescription issued to me for the severe illness and symptoms I had to endure for almost two months from December 2nd until the last week of January 2024.
Before the final exam, I had an 80% average in the course. As a result of writing the final (deferred) exam while severely ill, my mark dropped to a C. This grade does not at all reflect my knowledge and achievement in this course. It only reflects the fact that I forced myself to write the final (deferred) exam because I thought it was mandatory for me to write it to get credit for the course even though I was ill.
Therefore, I am submitting this petition to request credit standing for the KNPE 153 course due to the physical illness that negatively impacted my deferred final exam and my overall course grade.
