Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I hope this message finds you well. I've already tried to do one for another class, however I wasn't aware that all 100% of the coursework has to be completed, therefore I'd like to try and submit a formal petition for consideration regarding my academic performance in Socy 275. I would like to request a CR due to extenuating circumstances that significantly impacted my ability to perform academically.

During the scheduled period of my midterm examination, a critical family emergency occurred, my uncle fell into a coma, necessitating my immediate and constant presence at the hospital alongside my family. This unforeseen event deeply affected my emotional and mental state, rendering me unable to attend the midterm exam and properly prepare for it. I was not given a proper date for a make up exam and ended up doing this and my final assessment back to back in person on December 8.

In November, my grandfather ended up passing away. I left around the middle of November to take care of my dying grandfather up until he died. This resulted in me not being able to do my final assessment during the given time either.The grief and responsibilities that followed further impeded my capacity to focus on my studies and fulfill my academic obligations to the best of my abilities. Even though I was not able to make it back to campus until December 8th, I still tried to review the material posted online. These events took a considerable toll on my mental health, leading to prolonged periods of distress and inability to concentrate on my academic work.

The effect of these personal tragedies on my academic performance is evident in my inability to complete my midterm examination and the subsequent decline in the quality of my coursework submissions. Recognizing the impact these events had on my academic responsibilities, I sought support from a mental health professional to navigate through this challenging period. Their guidance has been instrumental in my ongoing recovery process, and I have attached a letter from a healthcare provider as part of my supporting documentation.I am aware that the university offers provisions for students who encounter extenuating circumstances that adversely affect their academic performance. Given the nature and timing of these events, which were beyond my control, I kindly request that my situation be considered under these provisions. I am committed to my academic pursuits and am eager to make up for the impacted period through alternative assessments or any recommended course of action deemed appropriate by the university.

I deeply regret any inconvenience my situation may have caused and am grateful for the opportunity to explain the circumstances surrounding my academic performance. I am hopeful for a compassionate consideration of my petition and am willing to provide any additional information or documentation required to facilitate this process.
