Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to formally request permission to drop the following courses from my current academic schedule: CISC 151, ECON 110ab 111/112, and PHIL 153. I understand the gravity of this request and would like to provide a thorough explanation of the circumstances that have led me to this decision.

Over the past few years, my academic journey has been marked by significant challenges stemming from an ongoing struggle with mental health issues. Recently diagnosed as depression, ADHD, and anxiety, these conditions have substantially impacted my ability to concentrate, heightened stress levels, and ultimately hindered my academic success.

The roots of these mental health struggles can be traced back to the passing of my brother, a loss that I never properly addressed or sought help for initially. While I coped outwardly, the impact on my mental well-being became increasingly evident during my time at university. The constant battle with my mental state has left me unable to focus on my studies, resulting in subpar performance in various courses and recent exams.

The overwhelming stress compounded by the challenges posed by depression and anxiety has made it increasingly difficult to maintain the level of academic performance I originally aspired to achieve. Whatever drive I initially had was diminished, leading to a cycle of underperformance.

Furthermore, the lack of enjoyment in my program of study has intensified these challenges. The course material felt monotonous and unfulfilling, contributing to a sense of purposelessness and further diminishing my motivation. This lack of motivation has proven to be a significant obstacle, preventing me from fully engaging with the material and completing assignments with the diligence required for success.

The combination of mental health struggles and a disheartening academic experience has created a cycle of underperformance that I am determined to break. I am fully aware of the importance of seeking appropriate support for my mental health, both through therapy and potential adjustments to my academic plan. Addressing these underlying issues is crucial to regaining focus, overcoming obstacles, and achieving the academic goals that initially seemed out of reach.

I am taking proactive steps to address my mental health challenges. I have started a medication regimen to manage and alleviate the symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Additionally, I am in the process of seeking therapy to regularly receive guidance and coping strategies tailored to my specific circumstances.

In conjunction with mental health support, I am exploring assistance from the school's academic services. Collaborating with academic advisors, I aim to secure accommodations that create an environment conducive to my academic success.

Engaging with a school advisor is also part of my strategy to navigate my academic journey more effectively. I intend to discuss my academic goals, explore potential program changes, and seek guidance on developing a structured and fulfilling course of study. By tapping into these resources, I aim to align my academic path with my interests and aspirations, fostering a sense of purpose and motivation.

I understand the implications of dropping these courses and the potential impact on my academic record. However, taking this step is necessary for my well-being and academic future. I am committed to addressing and overcoming these challenges, and with the proper support, I can return to my studies with renewed focus and dedication.

Regarding my future academic plans, I plan to change routes from science completely and am looking at business and political science, with my end goal being law. I am currently applying for programs at schools elsewhere and within Queens, so I urgently need the course grade changed so that it does not negatively affect my transcript.

I have attached documents that may help. I understand that this process may involve a committee review, and I am willing to provide any additional information or attend a meeting if necessary. Your guidance and assistance in this matter are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely, Oscar Young
