Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I hope this message finds you well.

Hello, my name is Rachel Efrem and I’m a second year in Computing and Creative Arts petitioning to drop CISC 223(Winter, 2024) out of desperation.

I’d like to start by emphasizing how distressing this semester has been for me, and if I had the opportunity I would've taken a break. I have been sick on and off for the entirety of it, my father underwent a major surgery to remove a tumor, and my house was broken into by robbers recently.

In addition to the constant stressful and emotional situations that I have faced this semester, I have been contemplating switching my major and finally came to a decision to do so this week which is very distressing in itself. Remaining in this course was my way of trying to figure out if COCA is for me, but because of how stressed out I’ve been about switching my programs in addition to my circumstances, I’ve fallen significantly behind on the content and struggle to catch up. I can’t sleep, can hardly eat, and can barely study because of the weight of this decision, and now that the deadline to drop this course has passed things have become much worse for me.

I would’ve come to the decision to drop this course and leave my program last week before the deadline, however that was when robbers broke into my home. So everything regarding academics slipped my mind and I missed the deadline, as I was and still am fearful and concerned for my safety. I want to drop CISC 223 specifically out of all my courses because it’s the most stressful due to its connection to Computing. I don’t want to drop the rest of my courses because they’re still useful for the program I plan on transitioning into, and I don’t want to finish this semester with nothing to show for it.

In consideration of all of this, I deeply implore you to be compassionate and lift this unnecessary load off my shoulders by releasing me from CISC 223. If I am forced to remain in a course that I do not need and that is doing more harm than good, it would be the final blow of how terrible this semester is and I’d be heartbroken. I don't even want to imagine what wouuld happen if I don't get my petition approved.

I'll attach documentation of everything, and the police incident number of the break-in is 2024-6325.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my request. I am hopeful that you will see fit to extend your understanding and support during this challenging time.

Warm regards,
Rachel Efrem
