Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to petitioning to drop CISC101 (Fall, 2023). After careful consideration and reflection on my circumstances, I believe it is in my best interest to drop this course.
I enrolled in CISC101 with the intention of gaining valuable coding experience. However, as an international student, I faced significant challenges that impacted my ability to succeed in the course. Adjusting to anew university system and cultural environment occurred to be more challenging than expected. I struggled with a low sense of belonging and experienced anxiety due to the fear of missing out on social connections while feeling isolated from my peers.
Additionally, my family has been facing significant challenges back home. My sister is currently having appropriate treatment at a hospital in another country, and the uncertainty surrounding her condition has been a source of immense stress for me. The lack of clarity regarding her discharge date and my inability to be there for her physically has had a negative impact on my mental health.
These extenuating circumstances have led to a significant decline in my motivation and have caused me to question my academic and personal goals. Despite my best efforts to persevere, I have found it increasingly difficult to focus on my studies and maintain a positive outlook.
I regret not dropping the course earlier, as I was unaware of the option to do so before the 8th week deadline. Had I known, I would have taken immediate action to alleviate some of the academic pressure I have been facing.
Looking ahead, I am committed to taking proactive steps to prioritize my well-being and academic success. I have revaluated my course selections for the upcoming term and have chosen subjects that align more closely with my interests and strengths. Additionally, I am dedicating time to self-care activities such as meditation and regular exercise to manage stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
I have come to accept that my journey as an international student may differ from that of my peers, and I am learning to embrace my unique cultural identity. By letting go of the pressure to conform and focusing on authenticity, I have been able to form meaningful connections with others who appreciate me for who I am.
In conclusion, I kindly request your understanding and consideration in granting my petition to drop CISC101. I am confident that by taking this step, I will be better equipped to navigate the challenges ahead and ultimately achieve my academic goals.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
Sincerely, Kate Provkina
