Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: During exam season I was under immense stress both related to academics and my personal life. I had only one day between my math exam and my psychology exam and most of my attention was on physics, math and chemistry as they are more closely related to the field I am interested in taking. However, I want to be clear that I still spent a lot of time and energy on my psychology work. I completed every reading with care and did every single multiple-choice practice question for each week. I did miss a lab and lecture due to my obligation to the Queen's rowing team however I still did my best to make up the material I missed. When I got my exam mark back I was genuinely shocked and after attending a review Zoom meeting I still don't fully understand the decision-making that went into making the exam. While we were given no long answer written to answer during the entire semester this portion made up 2/3 of our grade on the exam which is close to being 2/3 of our entire grade for the course. The practice exam given to us was also entirely made up of a multiple-choice section and there was nothing to help prepare for a long answer question. While I passed the multiple-choice section of the exam my grades on the long answer questions were 0.35/10 and 3.75/10 respectively. During my review session, I was told for the first time that I had to give definitions of psychology terms I used in my response. No one in my lab said they knew this was the case. I was also told a regrade wasn't worth it because there was a strict rubric that the graders were given. We were not provided with a rubric during the exam or any form of a rubric beforehand for answering these types of questions. I have asked to practise or go over these types of questions during our labs but I was told this was impossible as the activities for the lab were predetermined. At this point, I am failing the course with little chance of turning things around as the final exam is formatted the exact same and without being taught how to answer the question there is not much I can do. I no longer believe being enrolled in Psychology is beneficial to my education and while I missed the deadline to drop I had a close family member pass away recently which took much of my energy these last few days.
