Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Respected Associated Dean,
Hope you’re doing well. I am petitioning the faculty’s decision to consider MATH 111 and Math 121 as a Credit standing in the fall and winter semester (2022-2023). Unfortunately, I encountered unexpected and deeply distressing extenuating circumstances in my personal life that majorly impacted my ability to fulfil my academic obligations.
I am Safwan Bin Sadek, an international student, from Dhaka Bangladesh. I arrived a few weeks late on campus due to an unfortunate delay in my visa processing and therefore, I had a lot of trouble in making friends and adjusting. The cultural shock and staying away from home deteriorated my mental health. I had excessive anxiety and panic attacks. This in turn greatly affected my academic commitments. I somehow managed keeping up with the course assignments in the fall semester of my first year but the unexpected circumstances of my uncle’s critical condition took a greater toll on my academics in the winter semester of my first year. My uncle’s health was extremely critical for approximately 2-3 months from January. I was given this information by my family over a phone call. Since I couldn’t go back home in the middle of the semester, I felt helpless and I isolated myself. The distress had taken over the best of me and it impacted my ability to concentrate and focus. On the 23rd of April, I got the news of the ultimate demise of my uncle. This news had shattered me to the core. The emotional and mental strain posed serious consequences on my final exams. The news of the death came to me in the middle of my exams and it was extremely hard for me to focus and concentrate. Therefore, even though I passed MATH 111 and math 121, I couldn’t perform to the best of my potential. I got a D- and a D+ respectively in my MATH 111 and Math 121 courses as I was going through a lot at that point of time. This has resulted in a great decline in my GPA.The anxiety became very common for me in the middle of my exams as I could only contact my family online. Being away from home , was causing my mental health to degrade. In light of the tragic and unforeseen circumstances, I was unable to perform well.
I understand the importance of keeping up with my academic requirements and I assure you that I am now driven to perform better and alleviate my GPA. Going back home in the summer helped me attain peaceful closure and made me feel better. I am now driven to stretch my potential and work hard. I have also decided to seek help through resources available in campus. I do realize that I should have visited the Student Wellness Centre as it would have provided help to me at the right point of time. Therefore, I now decide to check in regularly with the mental health resources . I have also decided to follow a strategic plan to uplift my grades to the desired level. I do take academic advising to keep my degree in check and I also plan on meeting the PASS Advising and the learning strategist from the Student Academic Success Services.
Thank you for paying attention to this matter .I trust in your fairness to evaluate this matter and I humbly request you to arrive at a decision accordingly with the exceptional circumstances that I faced.
Thank you,
Regards,
Safwan Bin Sadek
