Dear Members of the Academic Appeals Committee,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to appeal for permission to drop the course Intro to Archaeology 130 with Dr. Cristiana Zaccagnino for the rest of this semester due to ongoing circumstances related to my mental health and family. I understand the importance of maintaining academic progress, but unfortunately, my ability to focus and perform to the best of my abilities has been seriously compromised by the challenges I am facing.
For the past several months, I have been struggling with serious anxiety, which has significantly impacted my daily life and academic productivity to the point I am unable to leave my room at times. The stress and pressure of managing my coursework alongside personal family difficulties has become overwhelming. My Mother moved to California this February, leaving my Dad in Canada. This has caused my Dad to sell the house I grew up in, which means that I am not even sure where I will be living over the summer (if the house sells). My parent’s separation is not something I had expected. I’m having a hard time coping with it and have been losing a lot of sleep worrying, not just about them but about what this means for me and my sister.
Despite my best efforts to cope with these challenges, I have found it increasingly difficult to concentrate on my studies and fulfill the requirements of Archaeology. The combination of academic responsibilities and personal struggles has led to a decline in my overall well-being and academic performance.
I have sought support from mental health professionals and have been actively engaging in therapy. However, despite these efforts, I have come to the realization that I am unable to give archaeology the attention and effort it deserves at this time. As such, I believe it is in my best interest to drop the course which would leave me with more room to focus on my other courses, specifically sociology in which I would like to major in.
I understand the importance of academic integrity and the impact that dropping a course may have on my academic progress. I would like to assure the committee that dropping archaeology is not a decision I have taken lightly. I have tried to keep up with everything and the reason I didn’t drop the course sooner was because I don’t like to start something and not see it to the end. But I have come to realize that I am asking too much of myself. I am willing to provide documentation regarding my family circumstances and have attached documentation of my emails with my therapist.
Thank you for considering my appeal. I kindly request that you grant permission for me to drop Archaeology for the current semester. If you require any further information or documentation, please do not hesitate to contact me.
