Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am writing to discuss the significant impact that mental illness has had on my academic proficiency throughout this academic year. As documented in the attached materials, I have struggled with anxiety and depression for many years and have been under the care of a professional for these conditions. The onset of my symptoms intensified to a greater extent than ever before when I began attending university, which led to a period of heightened anxiety and major depressive episodes. This period has lasted the last several months, directly coinciding with critical phases of my coursework, such as assignment deadlines and exams. Particularly with my depressive episodes, it has been challenging for me to keep myself functioning in a healthy manner, in the sense that it has been a struggle to eat regularly, get outside, and tend to my responsibilities (academic-related and life-related). The debilitating nature of my symptoms has severely compromised my ability to concentrate on academics and maintain the study schedule necessary for academic success. In response to these challenges, I have been following a treatment plan given to me by my healthcare provider, Angela Hiebert, who prescribed me a common SSRI medication under the generic name “Sertraline” to provide some relief to my symptoms. Although I have found some relief in certain areas with this medication, the side effects can be severe and can further hinder my proficiency. The journey to recovery from these challenges is prolonged and requires dedication, especially with a medication like sertraline. It can take a long time for side effects to subside and for the medication to regulate in my system, especially with my prescribed dosage. Due to my genetic makeup, I have a naturally high drug tolerance, and I have always required a higher dose than the average person. This has proven itself through antibiotics, pain relievers, topical numbing, anesthesia, and medication. That being said, I am currently taking more than two times the regular prescribed dosage of sertraline, which explains the side effects I have been struggling with. I deeply regret the impact these circumstances have had on my academic performance and am committed to taking all necessary steps to improve my situation. I appreciate your understanding and consideration of these extenuating circumstances when evaluating my academic record. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I am more than willing to provide further information or documentation as needed.

Sincerely,

Olivia Awde 20406018
