Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: My name is Hannah Cappe (20270240) and I would like to petition for a late drop of the course CHEM281 which I took in my first semester of my second year (Fall 2022). I also wish to petition to be permitted to drop this after the deadline has passed. During the beginning of the semester in which I took this course, I experienced a violent physical and sexual assault on campus that prevented me from properly participating in school (as reflected on my transcript). Having experienced this, I was affected very intensely on an emotional, social, and academic level. During this time, I withdrew socially from people around me and rarely left my house as it was terrifying for me to be walking around Kingston. Consequently, I did not attend classes as they were in person, which resulted in a decline in my grades. While I was able to pass my other courses due to some assistance and assignments that could be completed from home, I was unable to pass CHEM281 due to a 50% weighted final exam that I failed since I was not able to go to class. I did not file this petition earlier as I reached out for help only very recently and became aware of my options through that process. My grades have slowly, but surely been improving as I recover from these events, and I will continue to work with campus and community support services to help me manage in the future. I have also been working with therapists and other counselors to assist me in getting back on track.
