Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,
I am writing to formally petition to drop CISC 151 for the Winter 2024 semester. Throughout the semester, I have been struggling immensely with chronic migraines and insomnia which has caused my academic performance to be negatively affected. Despite my usual diligence in time management and meeting deadlines, the severity of my migraines leaves me bedridden and in pain for hours, rendering me unable to work or sleep. CISC 151 has a much heavier workload compared to my other four enrolled courses combined. Therefore, while I managed to complete evaluations and assignments for my other courses, the demanding workload of CISC 151, coupled with my insomnia, was extremely difficult to manage. For several weeks, I could not sleep for more than 3 hours at a time, struggling to fall back asleep until the late hours of the morning, if at all. Consequently, I was too exhausted to attend my morning lectures. This took an overall toll on my academic performance, mental health, and ability to learn. The severity of my insomnia and the resulting mental health issues I was experiencing even necessitated a visit to the emergency room at Hotel Dieu Hospital.
Seeking guidance, I consulted with an in-residence counsellor who recommended I drop CISC 151 and implemented several academic accommodations to assist with my situation. However, I did not withdraw from CISC 151 by the week 8 deadline due to uncertainties regarding the possible impacts it would have on my academic record. After consulting with both an in-residence counsellor and an academic advisor, I am confident that it is in my best interest to drop CISC 151.
If this request is approved, I intend to enroll in CISC 151 during the next academic year. In collaboration with my family physician, I have developed a comprehensive plan to manage my migraines and insomnia. For my migraines, which are primarily triggered by weather changes and stress, I have been prescribed a pain-relieving medication to be taken as needed. This medication has proven to be extremely effective at relieving the pain and other negative symptoms associated with my migraines, enabling me to tend to my academic responsibilities once again. Additionally, I have been prescribed a medication to relieve my insomnia. This medication allows me to achieve restful sleep and wake up refreshed, meaning I am no longer forced to skip lectures due to extreme fatigue. Furthermore. I intend to continue to meet with an in-residence counsellor to manage the negative mental health symptoms I have been experiencing related to this ordeal.
This comprehensive plan addresses both my physical health and academic career in a balanced manner. I am extremely grateful for the considerable support that Queen’s University has provided for me, and with this support in place, I am confident that I am able to overcome these challenges.
Thank you for your consideration of my request and for your understanding. I sincerely appreciate your time and eagerly anticipate a favorable resolution of this matter.
Sincerely,
Evelyn Clay
