Dear Associate Dean,
Re: First Level Petition to Drop CANC380 (W24)
I am writing to formally request the Faculty’s reconsideration of my case to drop CANC380 from my academic record due to extenuating circumstances which significantly impacted my ability to complete the course successfully.
During the W 2024 semester, I encountered significant personal challenges related to my physical health and well-being. I was struggling with my weight, exceeding 220 pounds, which precipitated a decline into depression. This condition severely affected my mental health and, by extension, my academic performance, specifically in CANC380. The severity of these circumstances became fully apparent to me belatedly, which is why I failed to drop the course by the deadline.
I sought support from a trainer by going back home and taking support from my parents and have been following a plan to manage my condition and running towards better health now which is boosting my confidence and mental health. However, the depth of my depression was such that I underestimated its impact on my academic abilities, leading to a delay in this petition.
The nature of CANC380, which demanded high levels of concentration and critical analysis, made it particularly challenging to perform well under the conditions of my depression. My performance in other courses, though affected, did not suffer to the same extent due to their different requirements and my existing familiarity with the subjects.
As mentioned, it was not until after the deadline to drop the course that I recognized the severity of my circumstances. Initially, I believed I could overcome the challenges with additional effort. Unfortunately, this was a misjudgment, and by the time I acknowledged my inability to improve my performance, the deadline had passed.
I appreciate your consideration of my petition and am hopeful for a chance to demonstrate my true academic capabilities under improved personal circumstances.
Sincerely,
Jobenpreet Sandhu
