Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean Stephenson:

I am reaching out to request a consideration for a late drop from the course CISC 365 for the current semester. This appeal comes in light of unexpected personal hardships that have severely impacted my emotional well-being and, by extension, my academic performance.

The recent passing of my grandmother, following a critical injury and prolonged hospitalization, has taken a significant toll on my mental health. This loss has been particularly challenging to navigate given my distance from my family in Turkey, whom I have not seen in many years. This period of mourning has made it exceedingly difficult for me to concentrate on my studies and fulfill my academic responsibilities to the best of my ability.

In addition to this personal loss, I am registered with the Queen’s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) for a disability, which has been further exacerbated by these recent events. The compounded stress from dealing with grief and managing my disability has rendered me unable to keep up with my coursework effectively.

Upon consultation with Professor Ting Hu, the instructor for CISC 365, it was recommended that a late drop from the course could be a viable option to consider under these circumstances. Professor Hu has been exceptionally supportive and understanding throughout this process. I have also sought assistance from counsellors at the Student Wellness Services to help cope with my current situation.

I understand the importance of CISC 365 to my academic progression, and it is with a heavy heart that I request this late drop. My intention is to retake this course in a subsequent semester when I am in a better state to commit the necessary time and energy it requires.

I kindly request that you consider my petition for a late drop from CISC 365. Enclosed, you will find supporting documentation outlining my current circumstances.

I appreciate your understanding and support in these difficult times. Allowing me to focus on my mental and emotional well-being will enable me to return to my studies with renewed focus and dedication.

Thank you for your consideration.

Warm regards,

Arda Ulas Ozdemir
